ALEKS as a TSI Alternative
To use ALEKS Math as a TSI alternative certain conditions must be met in a student case:
1. If a student has taken Math Boot Camp at UTSA and (or) not passed the TSI math
section with a score of 350 or higher after three attempts then such a student may sign up
in the ALEKS system using the course code listed. Students must spend at a minimum five
hours in the ALEKS drill or preparatory modules, and then an opportunity to take a
proctored, in-person ALEKS assessment is allowed as a potential alternative to the TSI if
a sufficient score is achieved.
2. If a student has met the conditions cited above and takes the proctored, in-person
ALEKS assessment at UTSA Testing Services achieves a passing score then the student has
satisfied the TSI requirement. A passing score on the ALEKS is 46-60 and serves to place
a student into College Algebra or MAT 1023/33/43/73.
3. The course or semester for which the student's TSI obligation is required must
not be in progress. This alternative must be executed and completed prior to the first
day of class of the semester.
TSI Math ALEKS On-line Study Resource
University of Texas at San Antonio is giving students an opportunity through the ALEKS
Placement, Preparation and Learning (ALEKS PPL) Assessment to determine readiness for
mathematics courses. ALEKS PPL is a web-based program that uses artificial intelligence to
map a student's strengths and weaknesses. In the ALEKS system there is a placement
assessment that is up to 30 questions and generally takes 60-90 minutes to complete. The
completed placement assessment provides an individualized Prep and Learning Module for
students to refresh their knowledge on forgotten topics. Students then have the
opportunity to reassess and improve their placement within ALEKS which provides a good
gauge of how a student will perform on other placement exams such as TSI and the UTSA
math placement exam.
ALEKS consists of three parts:
* An Initial Placement Assessment
* The Prep and Learning Module, an individualized, self-paced online review
* Access to one un-proctored, practice exam prior to taking a proctored placement
assessment(s).
The University of Texas at San Antonio Mathematics department encourages each student to
spend time in the Prep and Learning Module, even if the desired score is achieved, because
time spent in ALEKS will ultimately lead to better preparation and improved grades.
Topics covered:
* Real numbers (including fractions, integers, and percentages)
* Equations and inequalities (including linear equations, linear inequalities,
systems of linear equations, and quadratic equations),
* Linear and quadratic functions (including graphs and functions, linear
functions, and parabolas), exponents and polynomials (including integer exponents,
polynomial arithmetic, factoring, and polynomial equations), rational expressions
(including rational equations and rational functions
* Radical expressions (including higher roots and rational exponents)
* Exponentials and logarithms (including function compositions and inverse
functions, properties of logarithms, and logarithmic equations)
* Geometry and trigonometry (including perimeter, area, and volume, coordinate
geometry, trigonometric functions, and identities and equations).
Is there a fee for using ALEKS PPL? You will pay $25.00 for ALEKS with a credit card
before you begin the modules on-line. A separate, UTSA math placement fee is assessed of
$5.00 on each proctored assessment taken with Testing Services if the ALEKS is also being
used for UTSA Developmental Plan completion purposes.
Do I need to install any software or plug-ins prior to taking the ALEKS Placement
Assessment? No. There are no required plug-ins or applets required with your use of ALEKS
PPL. As long as you have access to the internet and are using an updated browser, you
should not experience difficulties in taking your Placement Assessment. For a list of
preferred browsers, please review the ALEKS system requirements on their support site:
http://www.aleks.com/support/system_requirements
May I use a calculator while using ALEKS? ALEKS will provide an on-screen calculator if
you need one to complete a particular problem. Otherwise, you may not use a calculator.
