All, Digital Music Production (MUS 3013), Audio Technology (MUS 3103), and Special Studies in Music and Health (MUS 4952) are open to all students and have no pre-requisites! There are also numerous Dance courses open (including an upper-division online option)! Digital Music Production (MUS 3013) and Audio Tech I (MUS 3103) are the two entry-level courses in the music technology minor program. While the former is more theoretical, and the latter is more practical, each course offers students a thorough introduction to music and sound production via the industry-leading music production program Pro Tools. (This program is easily and affordably downloadable online.) Students in both courses complete several creative projects while learning about present-day sound production techniques and practices. There are no prerequisites for either course. And both are designed to work for students of any musical or technical background. These classes are immensely valuable to anyone producing or broadcasting audio, which, during these pandemic times, is just about everyone. I am writing to you about the MUS 4952 Special Studies: Music in Health class that I am teaching next semester, in hopes that you will pass this along to your students as appropriate. This course will provide an opportunity to learn about the various ways that students can participate in arts-in-health initiatives as artists and scholars; I have specifically designed the class to be appropriate for students beyond just the music department. Students will have an opportunity to learn about and design projects that have a positive effect on the health and wellbeing of community members and health care workers, from performances or other art projects to public health outreach and undergraduate research opportunities. I have developed relationships with health care facilities and nonprofit organizations in San Antonio, and we are finding ways to continue this work even through the current pandemic. This class can lead to opportunities to participate in this work. There will be relevant reading assignments, some guest speakers (including a music therapist and other professionals who work in this field), and some virtual site visits to see arts-in-health initiatives taking place across the country, with reflective assignments to tie it all together. We will also talk about initiatives the music department is pursuing, including a research collaboration with Methodist Hospital, and the launch of a New Horizons band for veterans - these will provide outreach, teaching, and research opportunities in the future for UTSA students!
