Literature
Cross-listed with MAS 4953, AMS 3443, and WS 4953
TR 2:30-3:45pm, MB 1.124
Prerequisite: Completion of the Core Curriculum requirement in Language, Philosophy, and
Culture.
Course Description:
We will read texts in a variety of genres, such as testimonio, drama, novels, poetry, and
critical theory as we trace constructions of gender and sexuality in Chican@ and Latin@
literature of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Our main emphasis will be on
understanding how diverse genders and sexualities, particularly lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, and queer (LGBTQ...) experiences and cultures, challenge normative ideas in
relation to race, nation, class, migration, and desire. Readings will include works by
Virginia Grise, Ana-Maurine Lara, Junot Diaz, and others.
