Subject: Placement Exams
Good morning,
I wanted to provide you an update on the math and chemistry placement exams.
For Fall 2018, the chemistry placement test will no longer be given to place students into
CHE 1103 General Chemistry I. The prerequisites for the course are the following:
Completion of MAT
1073<http://catalog.utsa.edu/search/?P=MAT%201073> Algebra for
Scientists and Engineers with a grade of "C-" or place into MAT
1093<http://catalog.utsa.edu/search/?P=MAT%201093> Precalculus through the Math
Placement Examination or grade of "C-" or better in CHE
1073<http://catalog.utsa.edu/search/?P=CHE%201073>. This means students will have to
be eligible to take MAT 1093 Precalculus or higher to get into General Chemistry I. If
students don't meet the prerequisites they will be placed into CHE 1073 Basic
Chemistry.
Students can purchase ALEKS Chemistry learning modules (testing services website provides
the information) to help refresh their skills before the Fall 2018 semester, this is
highly encouraged.
This summer we will be piloting the ALEKS math placement test focusing on the admitted
engineering students. Fall 2019, the plan is to roll it out to all students. ALEKS will
provide both assessment and learning modules for students and it provides us with robust
data analytics.
Please communicate this to your areas.
Best,
Heather
