Students have always had the right to insist on submitting a petition in spite of what an
advisor tells them - and they do.

Subject: RE: 30/45 hour petition
Since the last column on the advisor guidelines sheet is "Encourage student to
petition?" does that mean that students are still able to petition under any
circumstances? I just want to make a clear distinction between how much authority we have
to deny petition attempts at the start versus simply discouraging a student from doing so.
Many students will submit petitions on groundless terms no matter how much an advisor
discourages them from doing so. If 100% of petitions will be denied if the student has
significantly more than 40SCHs left, then I would like to be able to tell the student that
and avoid the time spent on submitting the paperwork.

Attached is a revised 30/45 hour petition form so that students can project enrollment out
for more than 3 semesters. Also attached are some guidelines for these petitions.
