His History of the Peloponnesian War, "a possession for all time" as he called it, documented the defeat of his native Athens and the political and social choices that informed and followed the collapse of its naval empire. This course will explore the rich history of Thucydidean readership, which includes influential leaders and political thinkers from Machiavelli to Abraham Lincoln, with a special focus on how Thucydides' theories and historiographical method was informed by his intellectual milieu and the influence of his ideas on American military and foreign policy in the 19th and 20th centuries. I think cross-listing Seminar with CLA 3513 might be helpful. I saw that the HUM and PHI Seminars were cross-listed this fall so I thought if there are any other topics out there that would be appropriate to cross-list (like the Scientific Revolution Seminar in PHI/HUM), then that could be one section of Seminar that would have students from both majors which would help the enrollment numbers. As for the CLA Seminar, I think exactly what you said would be helpful. We could cross-list it with another CLA course, when appropriate. This is something I see done in English every single semester so I know this does work pretty well. If you'd like to meet in person I'd be happy to sit down with you to discuss it in greater detail. I really only see our CSHU majors take these Seminars, and since we have so few CSHU students it's hard for the enrollment numbers to go up. As a free elective option most students will lean more towards less intensive courses. The last list we ran had right around 45 CSHU majors (I think) and since not all of them are close to graduating the Seminar numbers are low. As for the UD CLA classes I have been selling these as much as possible to all my students. I have gotten several of my English majors into these classes, but I know the numbers would be higher ideally. One way to try and get higher numbers in Seminars would be to combine the CLA, HUM, and PHI Seminars into two sections. This way, either of the sections could satisfy this requirement for any of those majors listed. I know that's not ideal, but if these were the only two sections offered for all CLA, HUM, and PHI majors we might see some decent enrollment numbers. I am seeing that the PHI Seminars are extremely low as well (there are 4 students in one section and 6 in another). For those students needing 4973 to graduate this fall how should we go about handling this? I have already gotten very panicked students emailing me that their class has been cancelled and what does this mean for their graduation this fall. Kind regards, Miranda M.
