Subject: New interdisciplinary course in forensic linguistics - solving crimes with
language evidence
Dear Advising Colleagues,
Dr. Whitney Chappell and I are excited to share information with you about a new
team-taught course to be offered next spring. Below is a brief description:
This course integrates critical concepts from linguistics, criminology, intercultural
communication, pragmatics, and translation studies into the study of how language crimes
are solved and prevented by building upon a series of case studies which examine coerced
confessions, proof of authorship, language-based manipulation of interviewees during
police investigations, discourse analysis of evidence in multilingual courtrooms, etc.
Students will explore topics such as the application of critical discourse analysis,
sociolinguistics, forensic transcription and translation, wiretap transcription,
transnational models of interview/interrogation, due process, and communication of rights
to non-English speakers.
We would be thrilled if you would share this information with any undergraduate AND
graduate students who may be interested. Thank you so much!
