Dear Advising Community,
As you guys might know, I'm the advisor to a student organization. Through them, I've been able to unofficially advise other groups, as well. Some of the ideas that I've given out that just sort of make sense to me have been received as relatively novel. It was suggested to me enough times that I compile such advice in a format that makes it easier for me to disseminate. Thus, I wrote a book! (Well, it's short for a book but long for a booklet, so perhaps for vanity reasons, I'm siding with "book". :))
Thus, it's targeted at student leaders, but the principles in it can benefit any student or really anyone who wants a fresh approach to organizing and prioritizing. Since it takes principles lifted from my experience as a business major and then later as a philosophy major and applies them in the faraway land of student leadership, they should not become immediately irrelevant when applied to a non-collegiate context. But I send it to you so that you can offer the e-copy to any student leaders you might advise.
The e-book is (self-)published under the CC-BY arrangement<http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/> of Creative Commons, meaning it can be shared, adapted, and so forth without author permission. The only stipulation is that you attribute the original work to the original author.
While the e-book is free, if your e-reader doesn't do PDF, or if you find your laptop hard to curl up with, there is a print version available for $5 in my office (MS 4.01.78A). Why do that? Well, physical books make much better gifts (hint hint for any procrastinators), they're able to be loaned out, they can be autographed, and because it's a great way to use any recent raises that might have been announced. :)

Re: [Advising] 1 Hour course offered in spring
by advising@lists.sis.utsa.edu
Ms. Alegra Lozano in the Honors College has no problems with non-honors college students taking her HON 2201.001 (CRN 20743). It's a one hour class where students do community service and learn about community service in various ways. There's no GPA requirement or anything. She says it's fine to set an advisor approval for your students. It's good for their resumes, it can count towards organization requirements they might have, and it might help them get a letter of recommendation.

Subject: [Advising] Great News for Venesa Matthews
I am excited, yet a little saddened to announce that our colleague and friend, Venesa Matthews, will be moving on to a position with the Alamo Colleges as a team lead for SAC. Venesa has been with UTSA for six years and has worked predominantly with UTSA's provisional population as an advisor for the Academic Development Program. After the restructure, she joined me in the Life and Health Sciences Advising Center as one of our team leaders. Venesa has been instrumental in assisting our new center get grounded, and although there has been lots to learn, she has always made a conscious effort to help her new colleagues through any questions or situations that arose. We truly appreciate her efforts!
She has shared that she will greatly miss her UTSA "work family," but as I told her, those are ties that can never be broken. We will miss her as well, but we know that she is off to bigger and better things, and she truly deserves this new opportunity.
Venesa's last physical work day will be Friday, December 19th. Please join me in congratulating Venesa as she ventures into the newest chapter of her career!

Subject: [Advising] News You Can Use -
Dear Colleagues,
Tanya Orndorff, Director of International Student and Scholar Services and Assistant Director Courtney Balderas-Jacob, have agreed to post remarks in SPACMNT concerning any international student they refer to their assigned Advisor. The purpose is to provide Advisors with information they can use to help international students complete required forms and documents during advising sessions and better understand what the student needs from the International Programs Office.
This is part of a collaborative effort to strengthen the lines of communication between Advisors and the Office of International Programs, as we all serve the international student community here at UTSA.
Best,
Diana Howard
