We have some individuals in Academic Advising community who were accepted to present their poster sessions at the upcoming 2020 Texas Academic Advising Network (TEXAAN) conference. We are happy that they were selected and will be representing UTSA and our Academic Advising community. We wanted to provide them with an opportunity to present their session to us so we can learn more about these important topics. You are not required to sign up to attend the poster sessions. You can come and go at any time during the time frame and enjoy refreshments as you learn about the topics that will be presented in poster sessions and find out more about the Texas Academic Advising Network (TEXAAN). 4 Date: Thursday, February 20, 2020 4 Time: 10:00am-11:00am 4 Location: Student Union 2.03.08 (Anaqua Room) 4 Poster Sessions o The Modern Transfer Student: A Non-Linear Pathway to Student Success ? Presenter: Jason Trevino (Engineering) ? Abstract: The term student success is subjective. The 21st century college student is multi-faceted, non-linear, and intricate. Many students within higher education do not follow a prescribed pattern towards graduation and degree completion. A college student today may enter college at a community college and transfer to a university (upward transfer), or may begin at a university and decide to transfer to a community college. Students today are entrenched in a consumerist and convenience mindset. For instance, students approach higher education in much the same way they do as when shopping on Amazon. Time to degree completion is of the essence (delivery), the quality of the education (product), and the ultimate cost (monetary) of the degree is of the utmost importance. How can institutional stakeholders like Academic Advisors and Enrollment Management Personnel be more informed, equipped, and knowledgeable about how to approach the modern transfer student, so the student can graduate from the university in an efficient manner? A modern issue must have a modern solution. In order to address this in the most precise way, it would be best to take a look at just a small segment of this transfer population. Focusing on engineering transfer students will be the focus of this poster session, and eventual research study for all students transferring from a large, multi-campus community college to a large four-year public university. In order to address the issue we need to improve transfer processes (technology), staff education and awareness of the modern student, and communication between institutions. ? This session will meet the following NACADA Academic Advising Core Competencies: * Informational 2 - Curriculum, degree programs, and other academic requirements and options. * Informational 5 - The characteristics, needs, and experiences of major and emerging student populations. * Relational 2 - Create rapport and build academic advising relationships. o Should I Stay or Should I Go? Campus Engagement & Retention Among First-Year Engineering Students ? Presenters: Melissa Blanton (Engineering) & Nen Huynh (Engineering) ? Abstract: Academic Advisor track engineering students in cohort 2019 with specific questions to assess their sense of belong through campus engagement. Advisors examine first year freshmen needs and experiences at the beginning and end of the semester, and share their approaches and strategies advising our first year freshmen. The main purpose is to promote campus and community resources to support students' success. ? This session will meet the following NACADA Academic Advising Core Competencies: * Conceptual 4 - Academic advising approaches and strategies. * Informational 5 - The characteristics, needs, and experiences of major and emerging student populations. * Informational 6 - Campus and community resources that support student success. o "What, So What, and Now What" ? Presenter: Sarah Sanchez (Transfer & Transition Student Success Services) ? Abstract: "What, So What, and Now What" using Barnett's et al. (2004) model amended reflection model is critical when developing and analyzing an academic advising portfolios. The best way to enhance your interview for an advanced academic advising position is through the academic advising portfolio. It can tell your see! In this presentation, I will define 9 distinct artifacts all portfolios should have, in addition a unique 10th step. This 10th step illustrates the use of reflection. Reflection leadership challenges the practitioner to an in depth reflection of what they have achieved and contributed to their organization and institution. By doing this, academic advisors become empowered and take charge of their own professional development while navigating the changing tides of the academic advising profession. o Texas Academic Advising Network (TEXAAN) ?
