Importance: High
Advisors,
COM 1063 during Summer 2017 was a pilot for the Online BBA Program in Cybersecurity. This
BBA program did not officially start until Fall 2017. However, we needed to populate the
pilot courses in order to determine their viability for the new program.
The new course (COM 1063) was specifically designed to meet the COB Common Body of
Knowledge (CBK) requirements in a fully online course.
Therefore, students who have taken COM 1063 in the Summer 2017 first and second sessions
should be allowed to substitute COM 1063 for COM 1053 for their degree plans. By means of
this email, I approve a blanket substitution for all such requests.

Subject: COM 1063 and COM 1053
Dr. LeBlanc and Professor Wright,
It has come to my attention with one of my students, and a couple students from other
advisors, that Degree Works is not accepting COM 1053 and COM 1063. I was unaware during
Summer of 2017 that these were cross-listed course. Some COM students (majors and minors)
registered for COM 1063 this summer, but now the course is not being allowed to be used
towards their degree plan. While investigating the issue, I noticed the 2017-2018
Undergraduate Catalog, which was posted three weeks ago, read:
COM 1053. Business and Professional Speech. (TCCN = SPCH 1321)
COM 1063. Digital Business Communication.
(Credit cannot be earned for both COM
1053<http://catalog.utsa.edu/search/?P=COM%201053> and COM
1063<http://catalog.utsa.edu/search/?P=COM%201063>.)
I know COM students were not originally allowed to register for COM 1063 over the summer
and it was a one-time opportunity. I would hate to see students penalized for registering
for a course that they couldn’t know would not be applied to their degree plan.
Is there a way to allow use for both courses for Summer of 2017 only? If this is
possible, would it be possible for the Department to reach out to the Office of the
Registrar as nothing we can do in Degree Works will allow us to use both courses? Would
you prefer this to come to you in a petition so you have a paper trail?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. If you need to reach me, my extension is
4902.
