Re: [Advising] FW: FW: Non Course Based Success Program for TSI Students in Math, Reading & Writing
by advising@lists.sis.utsa.edu
Just to add, if a student qualifies for both writing and math course pairing, it is okay to mark both on the application and send the application to the TRC. LHSC happened to have a student in this situation so we needed clarification. Cyndi McCowen confirmed that this would be okay to do in these situations.
Thanks all!

Subject: Non Course Based Success Program for TSI Students in Math, Reading & Writing
Mr. Deviney,
Good morning. It was wonderful this past semester to get an opportunity to personally meet with you to discuss the NCB Program and the successes that we have had with assisting students to fulfil their TSI requirements and be able to enroll in college level course work as quickly as possible. Over the past 4 semesters, more than 95% of students enrolled and attended NCB have become college ready within one semester. As we prepare for the upcoming fall semester, we wanted to send a quick reference email for use as you work with assisting these students. It would be great if you could forward this email to your advising team. The following is a quick overview of the NCB Program:
· Assist students to become college ready in reading, writing, or math
· A holistic approach to skill building based on an Individual Success Plan consisting of a combination of small interactive classes and specialized tutoring.
· There is no charge for the course or materials.
Placement:
Placement into one of the NCB Program Classes is based on a student's TSIA score(s) as outlined in the UTSA Developmental Plan (pg. 24). A student must be enrolled by their academic advisor.
MATHEMATICS TSI Score 340-349 NCB 0210 - please note new course number
TSI Score 325-339 MAT 0213
TSI Score 310-324 NCB 0200 - Replaces MAT 0203, the Math Department is not offering MAT 0203 for the Fall 2015 semester
WRITING TSI Score 336-362 NCB 0700
TSI Score 310-335 WRC 0203
READING TSI Score 336-350 NCB 0700
TSI Score 310-335 WRC 0203
Mainstream or Course Pairing Option:
The Mainstream Option allows approved students to simultaneously enroll in NCB 0600 and WRC 1013 in the same semester; providing the opportunity to these students to fulfill both TSI requirements and complete English Composition 1 within one semester. Please carefully counsel any interested students, that although this is a wonderful option for students, it is also a challenging option. Students must be willing to commit significant time and effort to be successful with this option. In order to be considered for participation in the Writing Component of the Course Pairing Program, a student must have a score of at least 353 on the objective part and a score of a least 3 on the essay part of the writing section of the TSI Assessment and a score of at least 341 on the reading section of the TSI Assessment. Non-cognitive factors such as motivation as measured by the ACT ENGAGE assessment will be used as part of the selection process.
The application is attached for students interested in participating in this program. Please note that you will need to also sign the application and supply additional information. Please send all completed applications to: TRC Tutoring Services for processing. Selected students will be enrolled in the following specific sections of NCB 0600 and WRC 1013:
WRC 1013: Freshmen Comp. I MWF 8:00 - 8:50 CRN 11299
NCB 0600: Specialized Studies T/TH 8:30 - 9:20 CRN 19223 or
NCB 0600: Specialized Studies T/TH 10:00-10:50 CRN 19224
Enrollment in the NCB Program is a free, non-credit bearing course for students and successful completion of the course fulfills all TSI requirements. As a reminder, when enrolling these students the registration shows a "1.25" credit hours listing; this is a system default to ensure each student is tracked and the university is reimbursed funding.
I have attached the flyer you received during our presentation for your convenience. The flyer includes more information about this exciting program designed to help students achieve "College Ready" status.
Thank you for your assistance, please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions. We greatly look forward to assisting these students.

Orientation Information from UHPO
by advising@lists.sis.utsa.edu
Hi Advisors,
As we get ready to welcome our freshmen students tomorrow at the first Orientation session of the year, I wanted to send you some information and resources regarding the UHPO breakout sessions.
First of all, thank you to all the advisors who came to our Orientation Update training. We hope you found the information valuable. Your feedback has helped us to create some good materials for students.
Second, as a reminder, we will be giving students a "recommended" pre-health professions schedule at our breakout sessions. We will also give them the opportunity to take a picture of the "recommended" schedule flyers at our sessions, if they choose not to take a paper copy. Plus, the flyers is posted on the utsa.edu/advise/orientation site (for your and their information). Thanks to Jimmy for helping us get this updated.
Third, during our sessions, we emphasize that students must meet with their primary advisor on Wednesday and that missing their appointment time to meet with us is not an option. However, we are having walk-ins on Wednesday. We are asking that you refer students to our walk-in times (9-11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m.). Not every student needs to check in with us during orientation. We definitely would like to see the following students:
-Students interested in the four-year special programs (JAMP or DEAP)
-Students who are having serious trouble completing a schedule or can't follow the "recommended" schedule for some reason.
-Students in other special circumstances (i.e., associate's degree completers, etc.) with whom you are unable to figure out a schedule for their health profession.
***All other students should come see us after the Census Date to get more information on their individual health profession.
Finally, I have attached the following to this e-mail, for your information:
1. PowerPoint for our Medical/Dental/Vet, etc. room for our breakout sessions
2. PowerPoint for our Nursing/Respiratory Care/ Dental Hygiene room for our breakout sessions
***Please don't share these with students (in case we make tweaks). These PowerPoints are for your information only.
3. A flyer promoting our breakout sessions (for you to use during pre-advising, if you wish).
Thanks, as always, for partnering with the Health Professions Office to help the students be successful at UTSA. Please feel free to call us if you have any questions.

Statement from Chancellor William H. McRaven on passage of campus carry legislation
AUSTIN - Today, the Texas Legislature reached a decision on the issue of campus carry. While it is not what we had hoped for, I respect the Legislature's decision. I also appreciate legislators for recognizing the very specific safety considerations that are unique to campus environments.
It is helpful that the bill was amended to allow our campus presidents to consult with students, faculty and staff to develop rules and regulations that will govern the carrying of concealed handguns on campuses. I look forward to working with our presidents as they craft these policies and bring them to our Board of Regents for review.
I pledge to our students, faculty, staff, patients and their families and to all those who may visit a UT institution that, as UT System leaders, we will do everything in our power to maintain safe and secure campuses.
