CLEP & IS 1403 Pass Rates
by advising@lists.it.utsa.edu
Hello All,
Attached you will find a spreadsheet with CLEP pass rates since 2015-2016. The spreadsheet also includes data on the IS 1403 test-out option offered through Testing Services.
I'm also attaching 2 reports from College Board that are the source of the CLEP information. These reports provide information for scores sent to UTSA at the time of testing (students may have completed the exam elsewhere). One important thing to note is that this information considers a passing score to be a 50 or higher. UTSA requires a score greater than 50 on some exams (noted in the far right "Comments" column on the spreadsheet). For instance, even though ~79% of students earned a score of at least 50 on the Analyzing & Interpreting Literature exam, UTSA requires a score of 63 which is much more difficult to obtain according to the English advisors. Unfortunately, College Board doesn't provide a complete score distribution, so we don't know exactly how many students have met UTSA's minimum score requirement.
Additional things to note:
* Some exams have high pass rates but few students taking the exam (e.g., Social Sciences and History with a 100% pass rate but only 3 attempts in 6 years)
* The total number of students sending scores to UTSA has declined over the last 6 years, so we may want to encourage more students to pursue these low-cost options
* Common upper-level exams
* Marketing: pass rate has been high most years (70-80%), except for 20-21 (~61%)
* Information Systems: pass rate has remained fairly high over time (63-75%)
* Human Growth & Development: pass rate has declined significantly in the last 3 years from ~71% to 52-59%
* Common lower-level exams
* IS 1403: pass rate has remained extremely high with 99.5% of students earning credit since January 2018. This should be our go-to recommendation for any student that needs general elective hours to graduate
* Sociology: pass rate has been fairly high most years (80-89%), except for 18-19 (~68%)
* History of the U.S. I: pass rate has increased significantly in the last 2 years from 60-69% to 86-91%
* Psychology: pass rate has declined some in recent years from 69-88% to 54-62%
* Humanities: pass rate has fluctuated over time (e.g., 19-20 pass rate of 45% versus 20-21 pass rate of 81%)
