FW: Biosciences II-Change in management (BIO 1413.002)
by advising@lists.sis.utsa.edu
Good afternoon,
You may have students that previously dropped BIO 1403.002 coming in with an add form trying to add the course. Due to some circumstances the students have been offered the opportunity to re-enroll in the course. It appears there are approximately 10 students that have dropped.
Brandy, I appreciate you researching the case.tt

Good morning,
I received the below email from a student regarding adding BIO 1413.002 back to her schedule. I have spoken to Dr. Jordan, and confirmed his approval of the below information and the student will be provided a memo from him to attach to the add form before submitting the add request to Dr. Williams. Due to extraordinary circumstances, for this section only, students have been offered this opportunity to re-enroll. A copy of the email sent to the class is also below.
“I have had a unique situation arise, that I need immediate assistance with. I enrolled in Biosciences 2 this semester and was forced to drop the course over spring break and receive a “W”, due to the difficulty of the course. This afternoon, I received an email notifying me that the Biology department is removing the current professor from teaching this course and replacing him with a new professor. They are not going to count any of the previous grades and will use only grades obtained in the next month to determine the final grade for the course. I have already spoken with the new professor, Dr. Jordan and the dean of the biology department, and they have both agreed to allow me back into the course, contingent on my completing the “add” form. Is there a good time that I can stop by to get the form signed? I already have an appt. scheduled with you next week to discuss spring classes, but I would like to get this matter taken care of as soon as possible in order to re-enroll in the course.”
Kind Regards,
Brandy M. Barksdale, M.Ed.

Students,
Effective at the end of class today, I will be the instructor managing your section of Biosciences II, so let me introduce myself. I have taught introductory biology at UTSA for almost thirty years, as well as many other courses including evolution, animal behavior, the biology of human reproduction, and environmental law.
During the rest of the semester, we will be using iClicker devices in class. All iClicker quiz questions can be answered with the assistance of your neighbors, book and notes. The final exam will be based only on the material we are able to cover between next Monday’s class and the end of the semester. Your eventual course grade will be based on that final exam, the iClicker grade you accumulate from this point out and one or two on-line assessments. If your grade would be improved by including the grade you have accumulated with Dr. Troyer, then his grades will be included. It is my understanding that there is a group exercise. I suggest you not begin the project until we meet on Monday.
Attached is a copy of my syllabus that has been modified for the purpose of completing this semester. You will notice that we will be covering some ground that you have already visited. I can safely assure you that there will be little repetition when you compare what I present and what you have already been exposed to, though the chapters are the same. Please revisit those chapters. In the month that we have together, there are two objectives: (1) address the topics that I think are at the core of this course and the study of biology, and (2) prepare you for your next biology course, genetics.
Prior to next Monday, please view the first four narrated powerpoints.
