Reminder: Spanish Heritage Courses at UTSA
by advising@lists.sis.utsa.edu
Happy Tuesday!
As a refresher, please help the Spanish Department by placing students in the correct Spanish class. The Spanish Department has started a Heritage Speaker program, and attached you will find some information regarding these courses. Unfortunately, SPN 1034 will not count towards the core curriculum until the 17-18 catalog. A Heritage speaker is defined as: "A student who is raised in a home where non-English language is spoken, who speaks or merely understands the heritage language. Who is also to some degree bilingual in English and the heritage language," (Valdés, 2000). If you have any questions please don't hesitate to e-mail me.

Good morning,
The policy regarding Excess Hour Waivers options available to institutions is being reviewed. Please hold off on processing any additional 30/45 hour petitions and Contracts to Graduate (C2G). If you have a student coming in to do the petition or C2G let them know that the process is on hold and that you will get back to them once we have an update.
There is a meeting tomorrow afternoon so I'm hopeful a decision can be rendered rather quickly.
Thanks everyone!
Barbara

Good Afternoon,
I am writing to share with you the information on the ALEKS placement system and I am hoping that you will share this information with all the advisors. These two attachments were sent out to the current students today who are registered for either MAT NCB or MAT 0213 at UTSA per Dr. Norman's request and Dr. Williams approval as a pilot for this Fall 2016. The ALEKS system is being offered to students identified as developmental in math as an on-line skill building and assessment tool with the end goal of placing student out of development entirely prior to the first day of class.
If students have questions they can contact me at Testing Services.
Thanks
Joleen

AP/CLEP scores in ASAP
by advising@lists.sis.utsa.edu
OIT has temporarily disabled the link in ASAP that allows students to accept AP and CLEP credit. Here's the email from Laurie Trevino:
I have turned the AP/CLEP link off in ASAP with a message that lets the student know that it's unavailable and to check back
in a few days. This will allow us time to clean up duplicate records in the tables that the application uses for equivalencies
as well as work on the date issues below as well as a couple of bugs that have come up in the past that I had originally had
Andrea look into until all the other issues starting flowing in with changes from the upgrade. It seems it became a perfect
storm.
We will work with the folks to make sure the fixes are tested and will assist in cleaning the duplicates from the table.
This is what students will see in ASAP:

FW: Downtown MAS courses
by advising@lists.sis.utsa.edu
Attached courses for fall are low enrolled and need a little push:
MAS 2013 works for Language, Philosophy & Culture in the Core and MAS 3033 is a great upper division free elective.
Thank you - Sylvia

Reminder - today is last day to enter notes into GLOBAL
by advising@lists.sis.utsa.edu
Dear All,
This is just a reminder that today July 13th 6:00 pm is the last day to put notes in GLOBAL and track e-mails and have it migrated over to SSC Campus.
GLOBAL will still be viewable after today, but any notes entered after today will not be transferred into SSC Campus. SSC Campus is planned to go live on Monday July 25th.
In the interim period for the orientation advising appointments you will need to save notes on a word document on the I: drive. You can save a separate word document for each student or save all your notes from your advising appointments as one word document. In either case the students name, ID (banner or abc123), advising appointment date, and advisor name need to be included before each set of notes. For the continuing students you can do the same or put the notes in SSC foundation until Monday July 18th. The notes in the word document will then be copied over to SSC Campus.
The folder to save the word notes in is I:/Academic Advising/1Orientation Notes and then your specific center.
For those critical emails between the advisor and student, you should save them in a separate folder in your Outlook for now.
If you have any questions please contact your center director or Monica Glover or Sylvia Mansour.
SSC Campus is almost here! Thank you for being flexible during these exciting times.
