In Nudging Students to Success: The Integration of Academic Advising and Motivational Psychology, presenters from past highly-rated NACADA conferences come together to address this question: How do academic advisors effectively motivate students to take advantage of student success offices and academic planning tools? Despite the fact that most higher education institutions now offer a wealth of student success resources, survey data suggests that these offices are under-utilized by students. Presenters will discuss the micro and macro factors that contribute to this issue, and will argue that academic advisors play an essential role in the solution. Utilizing techniques found in Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein's "Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth, and Happiness," advisors are able to nudge students into making good decisions by altering predictable behavior through incentives such as intentional acts of persuasion and guidance to produce outcomes while maintaining a student's agency. UTSA Advising Spring 2017 Outreach Initiatives

Good afternoon! The UTSA Advising Outreach Initiatives for spring 2017 are coming soon. Based on recommendations from advising representatives on the CLASS Advising Task Force for spring 2017, and preliminary analysis of the tracker data, the advising executive leadership has agreed on a few minor simplifications in the materials distributed to the advising centers in December. As discussed during the December meetings, the timeline to begin the initiatives will remain April and May. Each advisor will receive their list after the close of the initial April priority registration dates, and will receive detailed instructions on the outreach. The lists will be pulled from current SSC data and will be comprised of the populations strategically targeted for spring 2017 outreach that we discussed in December: 201810 non-registered students, FR 1617 cohort, and 201720 unsuccessful graduation candidates. We will discuss the initiatives in more detail during the Advising Center Directors' meeting scheduled for Monday, April 3rd. C2G and WIP

Good morning all, Happy Friday! I hope you are all doing well. Suzanne is out on vacation until April 10th. As you work with students to complete the C2G please let them know that they need to submit however their account balance will not reflect the adjustment until after April 14th. As far as work in progress (WIP) transcript or errors on students transcripts continue your process of emailing Suzanne and she will work through them when she returns. If there is an emergency case, which a transcript needs to be evaluated please let me know. Degree Works & Students With 66+ Community College Credits

Hello everyone, There was a change made to run Degree Works better (having to deal with the tiebreaking function) that has affected the way it takes in transfer credit from a community college. When Degree Works reads the transfer work, it will take the first 66 hours based on the sequence number in SHATRNS. So, if WRC 1013 equivalent is sequence number 30 but they reached their 66 hours by sequence number 22, then WRC 1013 will end up in the Not Counted block. This would be when the 'XJCO' attribute I mentioned earlier would need to be utilized to kick stuff out that they do not need. Excluding Community College Hours from Degree Works

Hello all, We have many students who bring in courses from a junior college that exceed the allowed 66 hours. Sometimes Degree Works will not count a course a student needs if they have exceeded the 66 hours. A new attribute was created that allows you to tell Degree Works not to count a community college course. You can now go in to SHATRNS and code a course that the student does not need with an 'XJCO' attribute. This will only affect Degree Works. What it will do is kick that course out in to 'Not Counted' and automatically pull in another course (hopefully the one that you want). If it does not, then perhaps the student has quite a few extra hours and you may have to add the XJCO to a couple of courses before it will pull in the one you want. Public Health Concentrations very Important

Advising Community, It would be extremely helpful if a concentration was noted when any student moves from their current major in your area to Public Health. There are two concentrations under this major and they happen to belong to two separate colleges - COEHD and COLFA. Epidemiology and Disease Control (PUH - EPD) resides in COLFA and Health Promotions and Behavioral Sciences (PUH - HPB) is in COEHD. Both colleges want a concentration noted at the time of the change of major because issues are created when students are declared without the concentration. Brian Cordeau, from OIR has been brought into some of these conversations to help resolve these issues. I have mentioned to him that perhaps BANNER could be programmed to not allow for the change of major to PUH unless a concentration is selected at the same time. I believe that he will attempt to see if this is possible, but until then, it would be extremely helpful if you could ask students their preference.
