A GROUNDED THEORY STUDY OF THE RE-ENTRY PROCESS OF TEEN PARENTS' RETURN TO
SCHOOL AFTER DROPPING OUT

Without the rich stories of the experiences of teen parents who drop out of school and then re-enter, we do not have a total picture of the dropout phenomenon and how best to address the issues for this marginalized group. Using the research strategies of Charmaz' social constructivist grounded theory, Melton has gathered detailed stories about overcoming obstacles, connecting with others, and finding resources to complete their high school education. The pivotal role of school counselors as advocates becomes even more imperative to support teen parents in completing their education. Hopefully, this research has added depth to the understanding of what works, what is needed, and what interventions are most effective with teen parents. By using the Relational-Cultural Theoretical lens, Melton has developed the Model of Relational Resilience of Teen Parents who Re-enter High School after Dropping Out to better understand the experiences of teen parents by defining their needs, exploring their resiliency, and highlighting the importance of protective factors and relationships in returning students to school.

AERA Award for Distinguished Contributions to Research in Education
This is the premier acknowledgment of outstanding achievement and success in education research.
Palmer O. Johnson Memorial Award
This award is presented annually in recognition of an outstanding article published in the American Educational Research Journal, the Journal for Educational and Behavioral Statistics, Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, and Educational Researcher.
Review of Research Award
This award is given in recognition of an outstanding review of research article appearing in the Review of Research in Education and the Review of Educational Research.
Relating Research to Practice Award
Established to recognize outstanding contributions toward increasing the understanding and proliferation of links between education research and enhanced education practice, this award is granted for excellence in each of two categories: Interpretive Scholarship and Professional Service.
E. F. Lindquist Award
Named in honor of an outstanding scholar and researcher, this annual award is presented jointly by the American Educational Research Association and the American College Testing Program in recognition of outstanding applied or theoretical research in the field of testing and measurement.
Early Career Award
Established to honor an individual in the early stages of his or her career no later than 10 years after receipt of the doctoral degree, this award can be granted for study in any field of educational inquiry.
Social Justice in Education Award
Established in 2004, the AERA Social Justice in Education Award honors an individual who has advanced social justice through education research and exemplified the goal of linking education research to social justice.
AERA Distinguished Public Service Award
This award is granted annually in recognition of an individual who has worked to enact or implement policies that are well grounded in education research, or who has been at the forefront of efforts to increase recognition and support for education research.
Committee on Scholars of Color in Education Awards
These awards are intended to recognize (a) scholars at different stages in their careers who have made significant contributions to the understanding of issues that disproportionately affect minority populations, and (b) minority scholars who have made a significant contribution to education research and development. The three awards are: Scholars of Color Distinguished Career Contribution Award, Scholars of Color Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Scholars of Color Early Career Contribution Award.
Distinguished Contributions to Gender Equity in Education Research Award
Established in 2006, the Distinguished Contributions to Gender Equity in Education Research Award recognizes individuals within AERA for distinguished research, professional practice, and activities that advance public understanding of gender and/ or sexuality at any level in the education community.

SECC Campaign Final Week Updates

The UTSA SECC campaign is now well into our final week of this extended campaign. As of this morning the University is at 44.5% for our overall UTSA participation. We set a goal of 65% campus participation at the beginning of this campaign and there are still three days left to donate. Giving to a favorite charity through the SECC is an easy, effective and cost-efficient way to give. These contributions help improve the quality of life for people in communities locally, across the country and around the world. One of the great benefits of the SECC is the wide variety of charities and causes represented - there's truly something for everyone.
How is Your Department Doing?
Attached to this email are two Campaign Summaries, a current one from this morning and another one showing the finally numbers from last year's 2012 Campaign. Take a look to compate what your office or department did last year and let's try to better that.

Attached you will find information regarding the Fall 2013 Commencement in the Alamodome. The Memo from the Provost, Regalia Rental information, and Faculty Response Card are also attached for your review and response to the Dean's Office by Monday, November 25.
Commencement will be divided into three ceremonies. The faculty will be expected to attend only the ceremony for our college, Ceremony #2.
Ceremony #1 on Friday, December 20, at 4:00 p.m. College of Engineering and College of Liberal and Fine Arts
Ceremony #2 on Saturday, December 21, at 10:00 a.m. College of Education and Human Development, the College of Science, and University College
Ceremony #3 on Saturday, December 21, at 4:00 p.m. College of Architecture, College of Business, and College of Public Policy

A New Seed Grant Program

Dear Faculty Colleagues,
Attached you will find guidelines for a brand new seed grant program - the INTRA program. This program recognizes that research takes various forms and is not necessarily limited to the hard and applied sciences. It is also a recognition of the fact that faculty in some disciplines do not need large amounts of seed funds. For instance a faculty may need funds to conduct research for a book she is writing or to conduct a survey in a local high school.
The INTRA program will be confined to the faculty of the 5 colleges listed in the guidelines and will be limited to $5k per grant. It is expected that the seed funding will lead to either external funding or some other identifiable/measurable deliverable. The guidelines and the overall concept has been approved by your respective Dean and Associate Dean for Research.
In this seed grant program, the faculty would submit their applications (via Cayuse) to their Associate Dean for Research. Each college will then assemble an internal review team to grade and rank the proposals and send this information to the VPR office. The VPR office will make the final announcements based on quality of the applications as assessed by college reviews and a sense of proportionality (the size of the T/TT faculty in each college compared to the total such faculty in the 5 colleges involved). Assuming that all Colleges will fairly screen for basic quality, the larger colleges can expect to get more grants. The total number in any year will be limited to a maximum of 20 grants ($100k).
This program will initially provide funding for AY 2014-15. If funding levels for the VPR office are maintained by the institution in the following years, the program will continue.
