Horowitz selected as a literacy luminary

Rosalind Horowitz | Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching
Rosalind Horowitz was selected as a “literacy luminary” and invited to participate in a 50-year history of research in literacy. Her research trajectory appeared in "Oral language: The genesis and development of literacy for schooling and everyday life," which was published in "Research-based practices for teaching common core literacy." The volume serves two purposes: It assembles a body of knowledge from leading literacy researchers who each draw from a long career in the field to address topics of central importance to good literacy instruction; and second, research-to-practice leaders connect research to meet new rigorous standards with attention to policy and legislation.

An international panel of experts convened by the World Health Organization concluded Monday that eating processed meat like hot dogs, ham and bacon raises the risk of colon cancer and that consuming other red meats “probably” raises the risk as well. For the first time in 25 years, America's fourth- and eighth-graders are doing worse in math, at least according to The National Assessment of Educational Progress. NAEP, also known as the Nation's Report Card, tests students in both grades every two years on math and reading ability. This year, math scores reversed a long, upward trend with both grades testing lower than they did in 2013.

Regent's Outstanding Teaching Awards 2016

Dear COEHD Faculty,
The U. T. System is seeking nominations for the 2016 Regents' Outstanding Teaching Awards. Per Steve Leslie, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, "The awards will recognize faculty who deliver the highest quality of undergraduate instruction, demonstrate their commitment to teaching, and have a history and promising future of sustained excellence with undergraduate teaching." Tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure-track award recipients will receive $25,000 each.
The University of Texas at San Antonio will submit the following nominees for consideration of the award: 8 tenured, 3 tenure-track, and 3 non-tenure-track/adjunct instructors for consideration for the awards. Therefore, each college will submit a maximum of the following numbers of nominees:

* Nominees must have at least three years teaching experience at the university level.
The nomination of strong candidates who may already have received teaching awards or teaching award nominations is encouraged.
Below you will find the COEHD timeline for the submission/review process. As you can see, the timeframe is very tight and the awards are quite large. Therefore, it is important that we adhere to the timeline.
The nomination process will be conducted in two phases:
Phase I:
1) Nomination packets should be submitted to Liliana Gutierrez (liliana.gutierrez(a)utsa.edu<mailto:liliana.gutierrez@utsa.edu>) in the COEHD-Office of the Dean no later than Tuesday, December 1, 2015.
All nomination packets must contain the following materials for Phase I review:
1. A completed application form (attached),
2. A CV that emphasizes teaching accomplishments (maximum: 15 pages) and
3. Written statement delineating their philosophy of teaching (maximum: 3 pages, 12 pt. font). Information regarding how to compose a quality teaching philosophy statement can be found online at http://lib.utsa.edu/services/faculty/teaching-learning-services/teaching-... (click on Teaching Philosophy Development).
2) Each college will identify their nominees and email their names to Dr. Nancy Martin.
Phase II: The UTSA Award Selection Committee will determine the University's cohort of nominees. These 14 UTSA candidates will develop a full e-portfolio that will be submitted for consideration at the U.T. System level. It is important to return the response card if you will be attending Commencement.
Commencement will be divided into three ceremonies. You will be expected to attend only the ceremony on Saturday, December 12 at 4:00 p.m.

We have a limited number of Regalia sets in the Dean's Office that can be borrowed by the junior faculty. Please let me know by Friday, November 13, if you would like to borrow regalia. If we still have regalia after this date, the senior faculty can then borrow.

Obesity Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) Webinar
RTRN has selected Obesity/Metabolic Syndrome as the topic for a Network Wide Health Initiative. The goal of this webinar is to unite RCMI expertise in a collaborative team effort to develop and submit an Obesity related proposal and to ensure successful implementation of the protocol if funded. Obesity lends itself to exploration from many facets including Cancer, Inflammation, Diabetes, and Cardiovascular disease, and allows for significant engagement of the diverse communities.

COEHD Fifth Annual Student Research Colloquium

Dear COEHD Faculty,
We are pleased to announce that the College of Education and Human Development will be hosting the Fifth Annual Student Research Colloquium on November 20, 2015 in the HUC Ballroom 1. This forum is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to share their research from a class project, thesis or dissertation, a work in progress, work with a faculty member, or research that has been previously presented elsewhere. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Undergraduate, Masters, and Doctoral. First place winners in each category will receive $500, Second place winners will receive $400 and Third place winners will receive $300.
Please encourage your students to participate in this worthwhile event. It is an opportunity to showcase the excellent work being done by COEHD students and is a good way to practice presentation skills. A bonus for the undergraduates who participate is that they can get valuable feedback from this event and then submit their poster again to participate in the University-wide UTSA Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry Showcase that will be held April 21, 2016. More information about the Showcase will be provided at the Colloquium.
