As we get ready to head out for the holiday break, I wanted to alert you to an important event in early January. Each year the university schedules a COEHD Tenure and Promotion forum hosted by Provost Frederick, Dean Merchant, and a selection of departmental colleagues. It is my job to manage those this year and COEHD's event is scheduled on January 14, 2016 from 2-4 pm in the Buena Vista Building (BV 1.322) of the Downtown Campus. If you are an untenured faculty member preparing for tenure review or a tenured faculty member preparing to go up for Full Professor, please plan to join us for this session. There will be ample opportunities to ask questions and to clarify the process. Additional information will be forthcoming in the new year; for now, please save the date and feel free to contact me directly if you have questions.

Student opportunity with ATE

The Academy for Teacher Excellence (ATE) is currently seeking students to volunteer in our after-school Informal Learning Clubs beginning Spring 2016. Students are loaned an iPad at the beginning of the program, and if they fulfill all the requirements they get to keep the iPad! The ATE staff has a short, 10-minute, prepared presentation with handouts and we would like to come visit your class(es) sometime between January 11 and January 25 and present this opportunity to your students.

Students in the Department of Counseling's Neurofeedback Program published an anxiety treatment pilot study findings in the peer-reviewed NeuroRegulation journal, for which they won the student research presentation award at the 2015 conference of the International Society of Neurofeedback and Research. The award was presented to Stephanie Dreis, lead author, and two other student team members, Michael Fitzsimmons and Michael Russo.

Course Description
This course provides multiple opportunities to deepen understanding of qualitative research methods on such topics as grounded theory, phenomenological study, case study, content analysis and document analysis in Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching. The course examines various design elements of qualitative research including sampling, data collection and data analysis from various theoretical frameworks. Specific attention will focus on the development of observation, interview skills, focus groups, and recording of data as well as the political and ethical issues in qualitative research.
Course Goals
This semester, this course will focus on narrative inquiry and narrative analysis. Creswell (2013) states that "narrative research has many forms, uses a variety of analytic practices and is rooted in different social and humanities disciplines" (p.70). It is a method that begins with experiences, lived and told and has at least seven defining features. In this course, we will discuss narrative as method and phenomenon, types of narratives (biographical study, autoethnography, life history, oral history), procedures for conducting narrative research, re-storying, and narrative analysis.
