Proposal development support options AND a time-sensitive request for info on possible connections between COVID-19 related issues and your research area

Dear Faculty,
I’m writing with a request for information and also to share with you help that is available for research proposal development:
Request: Please reply to me (today if you can, Monday if you must) with any ideas for how you might be able to apply your research focus on COVID-19 related issues? Jaclyn Shaw has asked for a list of possible applications. With that we will try to help you find related research funding for you given the growing number of local philanthropic and federal funding options available for work in this area relevant to your interests.

Think broadly or creatively and you may see connections, considering the disruptions to schooling and employment, policy changes related to immigration, and experiences of increasing isolation as well as family connection time, increased use of technology by families, schools and businesses, all from the COVID-19 response.
Support for Proposal Development: The VPR’s REDKE Office would like to provide proposal development assistance to faculty. Currently we do not have a Grants Development Coordinator, but the VPR’s REDKE Office, specifically Jaclyn Shaw and Liana Ryan in Research Support, want to provide faculty with grant proposal writing and proposal support as needed, whether for COVID-19 related or regular research proposals that you have identified a funder for. You can contact either of them (info below) or the RSC Director you work with (for most of you that is Jennifer Silver, but those submitting grants through in Downtown Campus Centers may use the DT RSC, and should contact Theresa Bailey) once you have a funding opportunity in mind and are ready for assistance.

Specifically, given that all research conducted remotely can continue, but any face-to-face research with human subjects must be temporarily suspended. Where possible, you may want to transition in-person interactions for your studies to remote interactions (e.g., phone, video) to limit potential exposure. All other studies must cease. For sessions where bandwidth is a concern, Blackboard recommends that no users share their web cam video unless required for the instruction. Internal grants submission dates extended for GREAT and Connect awards to April 7th and 14th

I want to make sure you know that the due dates for internal research competitions have changed (been extended, see below) and also make sure you all are aware of research procedures to be followed presently.

Access to Research Labs/Spaces
To reduce health risk for all researchers in the Roadrunner community during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, each principal investigator (PI) or group leader of a laboratory research program (experimental, computational or otherwise) is being asked to discontinue campus laboratory research activities, with the expectation that suspended lab access will likely last at least six to eight weeks. However, PIs may request a shut-down exemption for essential research activities only. To be designated as essential, the research activities must meet one or more specific criteria. These criteria and the Exemption Request submission portal are available here:

Thinking Ahead and Planning for Fall
Dr. Bonner and I will be reaching out to individual faculty about their projects as we learn more about accommodations specific funders are allowing. One suggestion I have is for faculty with sponsored projects, who are wondering what they can do to extend their studies (using just existing, planned funds) to complete the work they planned for this spring during next Fall, (now that data collection this semester may be shut down for those doing in vivo and face-to-face data collection). You may want to look at the balances on your fringe accounts and see whether there will be remaining funds that would support extensions of research projects in terms of paying for time needed to finish their work for PI Course Buyouts of GRA stipends. Other options may be suggested by specific funders in the coming weeks, including support or extension options provided by funders; and as we learn about these we will make that information available to those affected.
