This one-day seminar is geared for junior faculty, students, and administrators who are beginning the process of submitting grants to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is also relevant for seasoned researchers who wish to refresh their knowledge of the new NIH requirements and the peer review process. Ultimately, the focus is to assist all who wish to submit winning research proposals to the NIH.
Participants will learn how to:
* Find the appropriate program and grant mechanism for your idea
* Read and interpret RFAs
* Identify and avoid common pitfalls of a grant
* Develop an irresistible idea for your grant application
* Address the pieces of the request for proposal
* Maximize your application for competitiveness
* Package the proposal in the requested format
* Understand the new scoring system and the review process
* Learn what actually happens in the study section
* Search for the appropriate study sections for submissions
* Decipher pink sheets: the inevitable resubmission
* Build an airtight case for funding
* Discern the art of the budget
Presenter:Dr. Fatah Kashanchi trained under the supervision of Dr. C. Wood who worked with Dr. Susumu Tonegawa (Nobel Laureate for Medicine, 1987) at MIT. Dr. Kashanchi further trained in Dr. John Brady's lab at NIH/NCI from 1991-1998 and published more than 30 papers during his postdoc and senior investigator tenure. His research interests include both Genomics and Proteomics of HIV-1 and HTLV-1 infected cells. Research in Kashanchi's lab has been funded by various internal and external sources including Selective Excellence, Keck, Snyder, Sinsheimer, Cyclacel, and more than 6 NIH grants, where he is the Principal investigator. Since his departure from NIH in 1998, Dr. Kashanchi has obtained $9.4 M of independent funding. He has 132 peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, 9 book chapters, is an NIH study section member (7 independent study sections), as well as reviewer for 14 different journals.

College Signing Day

The First Lady Obama's visit will be this Friday on May 2, 2014. UTSA Today will put out a story this afternoon.
However, I have just been informed that this will be a COMPLETELY CLOSED EVENT. UTSA will be hosting the event but all other details will be handled by the city and the Secret Service.
Because the event is educational in nature and of great interest to our college, I am working through University Communications and others to see if we can get a video link or pod-cast of the event. I will keep everyone up to date.

First Lady Michelle Obama to visit UTSA on Friday, April 28th

SAN ANTONIO - First Lady Michelle Obama will be making a trip to San Antonio this week to encourage our young and talented students to pursue a college education. Mrs. Obama will speak at the University of Texas San Antonio for the 4th Annual College Signing Day event on Friday, April 28, at 10 a.m. in the Convocation Center. She is expected to talk about the importance of getting a college degree.
The event is the culmination of 'Destination College' - a week dedicated to students' commitment to higher education.
Her office says she will 'highlight the significance of pursuing and completing some form of higher education, and the importance of students doing their part of answer the President's 'North Star' education goal.' That goal calls for the U.S. to have the highest percentage of college graduates in the world by 2020.
Mrs. Obama will also encourage Americans to wear 'college apparel' on Friday to show their support for higher education.
The first lady will also support Mayor Castro's efforts to 'celebrate San Antonio as both a college town, and a college-going town.'
As in previous years, San Antonians are encouraged to promote College Week by wearing their alma mater's shirts and hats this Friday and posting their pictures on social media using the hashtag #ReachHigher.

Adolph 'A.J.' Delgado and Pamela Bejarano were named the Outstanding Graduate and Undergraduate Student, respectively, for the College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) during the 38th annual University Life Awards. The awards ceremony, which is sponsored by The University of Texas at San Antonio Student Government Association, was held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 3 in the H-E-B University Center Ballroom.

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) took home a Gold Accolade Award in the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District IV competition. The award was one of 10 presented to the university.
