COEHD Faculty, After reading an email, we should always have the mindset of “is this email legit?, do I know this person?, what email address is it coming from?” This is where the phrase STOP.LOOK.THINK comes in! There is a GMAIL account named Dept.Chair341 that was created by Hackers for a phishing attack - to gain information. It is being sent to all faculty to get your cellphone number. DO NOT RESPOND. The message looks similar to: From: Thelma Duffey <dept.chair341(a)gmail.com> Subject: [EXTERNAL] Date: February 18, 2021 at 2:46:24 PM CST **EXTERNAL EMAIL** This email originated outside of The University of Texas at San Antonio. Please exercise caution when clicking on links or opening attachments. Available, cellphone number? Best regards So far, I’ve seen COU and BBL targeted. I’m sure all departments will see this email soon! Because everybody has a cell phone nowadays, Smishing Attacks are becoming the preferred method of committing fraud! Our Senior Grant Development Coordinator, Mr. Iwan Notowidigdo, has familiarity with their programs and has indicated that these sessions could be useful. According to Iwan, “Department of Defense grants are very methodical, their program officers are very helpful and responsive, and usually they are funded for an extensive time period. DOD areas that connect with education tend to be things related to stress, preparation of students in STEM fields, and overall workforce development. Areas such as cybernetics/machine learning/artificial intelligence, weapons development, or military training scenarios are more far afield of what COEHD faculty do...but you never know where linkages might be found.” If you have any questions, please contact either one of us and we will be happy to help.
