Please share this training experience with undergraduates who have potential for research at UTSA and
for learning from the American Education Research Association Conference at-large. Students will have an outstanding opportunity that will shape their career and research aspirations. I spoke at the workshop Symposia for undergraduates, two years ago, met undergraduates from Tier I schools, and found the structure and content highly valuable. The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is pleased to announce the AERA Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2FAERA.inf...>. The workshop, led by junior and senior scholars, will give fellows an overview of how education research is designed across fields, how quantitative and qualitative research methods are used in studies, and how research is applied to education policy and practice. Senior researchers and faculty from both academic institutions and applied research organizations (i.e., The American Institutes for Research, Educational Testing Service, the College Board, and the Urban Institute) will introduce education research as a field and share their area of expertise and knowledge with the fellows. In addition to attending the workshop and participation in the poster session, fellows will attend pre-selected paper sessions and presentations during the 2020 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. Fellows are required to participate in all Workshop events and the invited poster session to present their research during the 2020 AERA Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
Dates: The Workshop activities will take place Friday, April 17 – Sunday, April 19, during the 2020 AERA Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
Award: The award includes annual meeting registration and two nights of lodging. The fellows and/or their home institutions are responsible for transportation costs to and from San Francisco. Most meals are part of the Workshop activities.
Eligibility: Underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities and women are encouraged to apply. Candidates may come from a broad range of fields across the arts and sciences. Candidates must:
* Be students in their sophomore, junior, or senior year of college in good academic standing.
* Be interested in pursuing a graduate or professional degree that can lend itself to education research areas such as children and youth, school and schooling issues, higher education, education policy, student achievement, curriculum and instruction, education psychology, or education leadership.
* Have current or ongoing research that can be presented in a poster session.
* Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident or a non-U.S. citizen attending a school in the U.S.

Welcome Back!

Dear Colleagues,
Welcome back! I hope that you had a restful and productive summer and that you were able to spend time with those important to you. Please join me in welcoming our new faculty and staff who you will get a change to meet at the college-wide meeting September (date TBA). The new faculty have been busy attending orientation workshops and exploring their new professional home. Please reach out to them and get to know them as the semester begins. Also, I want to congratulate our new department, Race, Ethnicity, Gender and Sexuality Studies ( REGSS) . We are excited about this department officially 'opening' this semester and look forward to its growth and success.
As the campus fills with the activity of returning and new students and the summer winds down, I look forward to engaging with you and continuing to set direction that moves us forward and underscores the important role the college plays on the campus , in the community, and on local, national, and international policy and knowledge production. The work that you do makes a difference daily, and we are entering into a very exciting time as a university. Provost Espy is entering her second year with us, and has worked collaboratively to set direction aligned with President Eighmy's vision. New organizational structures and alignments at the institution, as well as in our own college, will allow us to focus on student success and efficient operations that contribute to outcomes across the board.
Our leadership team, comprised of Department Chairs, Associate Deans, and faculty Assistant Deans have met over the summer and will be working on collaboratively developing strategic initiatives with department faculty and program directors that feed into the college metrics and are aligned with President Eighmy's three destinations. Additionally, we have opportunities around innovative curriculum development, cross-cutting partnerships, and engagement with the community. Our focus on community engagement, student success, research excellence, and strategic growth will contribute to the overall forward momentum of UTSA. It is a very exciting time to be a part of this university and your contributions in these areas are a critical and driving force.
We will be sending out a master calendar with college-wide meetings dates, junior faculty luncheon date, training and support opportunities, opportunities to meet students during Donuts with the Deans, and one on one appointment times with me at either the 1604 or DTC locations. As always, these meetings are open to all.
Just a reminder as well: As part of the UTSA 50th Anniversary Scholar Speaker Series, this week we have COEHD faculty member, Dr. Langston Clark, who will be giving a talk titled: Mind and Muscle: The Intersection of Black Athleticism and Intellectualism. This talk will take place at The Garage at the Pearl. Doors will open at 6, the talk will begin at 6:30. More details can be found in the link below.

More details will be sent, and try to bring your class if you can.

John Jeka Presentation

COEHD will host guest speaker Dr. John Jeka, the department chair for Kinesiology and director of the Control of Balance and Locomotion Lab at the University of Delaware. Dr. Jeka's lecture will discuss his research about how the nervous system uses sensory information (e.g. vision, inner ear) to approximate body dynamics and guide motor processes for upright balance control. His research findings have applications for populations with neurological conditions and injuries that lead to balance problems, including older adults, those with Parkinson's disease, and athletes who have experienced concussion.

(Above) New arrivals to the Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CPD), current CPD undergraduate students, and graduate-level students all took a few minutes out of their busy orientation for a group photo. Students from the CPD started the Fall Semester a few days early during the program's orientation held on Thursday, August 22, 2019. The CPD program is unique in that it offers a joint degree - both a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Dietetics and Nutrition and a Master of Dietetic Studies (MDS) - with more than 1200 hours of supervised experiences. The Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Nutrition will host three information sessions (Dates below) for anyone interested in the CPD program or who would like to know more about a career as a dietitian or nutritionist.

UTSA FACULTY: THEN AND NOW
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF FACULTY EXCELLENCE
This exhibition recognizes the legacy of UTSA faculty, who are central to advancing the university’s mission of teaching, research and service. Featured in the exhibit are early portraits of 78 of UTSA’s pioneer tenured/tenure-track professors hired between 1972 and 1978. These individuals, who either completed their careers at UTSA or are still employed by the university, helped shape the curriculum, set academic standards, and significantly impacted the lives of many students throughout UTSA’s 50-year history. We hope that this exhibit elicits fond memories of professors who have made a positive impact on your life.
Each portrait was developed using a printmaking technique called plate lithography, in which the photograph was transferred onto an aluminum plate, then inked and sealed.

Hello Everyone,
Last week during the Transdisciplinary Research Council Meeting, I discussed the long-standing informal policy for the amount of time needed to support proposal submissions. I have attached the formal policy. Please note that there are exceptions that address proposals submitted after the 5/2 deadline, with approval by department chairs and ADRs. Our primary purpose for this policy is to allow enough time for RSC staff to conduct a review of the proposal in accordance with the BAA/RFP or other solicitation and requirements from the sponsor.
The RSCs will meet with new faculty (and have been working with many already) and are eager to support their research administration needs.
