COEHD Diversity and Inclusiveness Committee (CD&I) and SB 17
by COEHD Dean
Dear COEHD faculty, staff, and students,
The college has been notified by legal counsel and the UTSA Office of Auditing that the COEHD Diversity and Inclusiveness Committee (CD&I) which is formally recognized in our COEHD bylaws violates the terms of Senate Bill 17 (see bylaws enclosed), thus it needs to be dissolved immediately to be in full compliance. Because this is an official committee governed by bylaws, it would ordinarily require a voting procedure for amendments and repeals. In this exceptional circumstance, we are obliged as a college to comply and eliminate this committee from our bylaws to avoid possible legal action.
As a step forward, I indicated to members of the CD&I this past fall my support for visualizing a committee whose scope and purpose would be to advocate for the unique needs and interests of our community albeit within the parameters of the senate bill. Members of the CD&I committee agreed in view of the tight deadline of December 14th, 2023 that the current DEI committee should be eliminated but that we would explore other committee possibilities in the near future. The general sentiment among CD&I committee members was that a more prudent and methodical strategy in determining committee mission, aims, and desired outcomes was more advantageous given all the ambiguity and unknowns with the bill; e.g., the immediate effects of the bill in the classroom, forthcoming system guidance on SB 17's effect on grants and contracts, compliance to the multitude of national and federal regulations (e.g., SACSCOC), and that the committee building process should also include students and draw on data and input. I fully support this idea and look forward to a new iteration of the committee this coming academic year.
I look forward to embarking on this work and designing a committee that reinforces our commitment to the unique interests and needs of our community and mission to transform lives. As always, I welcome your ideas and suggestions. This can be done and I look forward to contributions from all of you. I appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

Upcoming Workshop and Lecture with artist Polly Guo (Free and Open to the Public!)
by Racial Justice
Hello COEHD Community,
Democratizing Racial Justice is hosting a workshop and lecture series with the L.A. artist and educator Polly Guo in July. Polly has worked on animated shows Adventure Time, She-Ra, and others. Her critically acclaimed comic ‘Gawain’s Girlfriend and the Green Knight’ appears on The Beat’s ‘Top 100 Comics of the Decade.’ She is trained in developing Social Emotional Arts (SEA) curricula by the UCLA Arts and Healing Initiative and is currently a professor at Calstate Fullerton (CSUF).
Sharpie Comics Workshop: Finding Your Voice
Wednesday, July 24, 2024
12:00 pm – 2:30 pm
REGSS Community Room (DB 3.202), UTSA Downtown Campus
Craft a comic to create your narrative and find your voice through storytelling. Participants will learn to create self-reflective characters through a community lens. Polly will teach workshop attendees how to draw, write, and assemble their own comic, all by using papers, sticky notes, and Sharpies! The workshop is open to the public. Previous art experience is not required!
Registration is limited to 24 participants and will be on a rolling basis. The registration form will close the week of June 21, 2024.
Register Here: https://forms.gle/YtxCjeBKc6scsKk5A
Beyond AutoBio: Comics, Community, and Self-Determination
Thursday, July 25, 2024
6:00 pm
REGSS Community Room (DB 3.202), UTSA Downtown Campus
What does it mean to make art about yourself? Is the label of “autobio” a false promise to the author and reader? In a time of rapid disenfranchisement of both art and the human spirit, artist and educator Polly Guo talks about the power of comics and narrative as an accessible way to increase self-identity, to express one’s self authentically, and connect with community.
Come enjoy a discussion on art as a self expression in the age of moving technology and telling your story with a community.
Register Here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/beyond-autobio-comics-community-and-self-det...
Both events are free and open to the public! Feel free to share and invite your students, friends, community members, and colleagues!
