When K-12 students head back to school around the city, chances are good they may be taught by a UTSA alum. The UTSA College of Education and Human Development offers the leading teacher training program in San Antonio. It sends out 500-600 teachers into classrooms every year.

Linda Santos never thought she would be able to come back to school. The 47-year-old mother of two always knew teaching was something she was meant to do. She had more than a decade of experience working with children in the San Antonio Independent School district. But becoming a teacher required a degree and she didn’t think she would make it through a teacher preparation program; that is, until she came to The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

The UTSA Mexico Center, in collaboration with the UTSA College of Public Policy and the St. Mary’s University Center for Legal and Social Justice, will host a conference, “Central American Young Migrants and the Border Crisis: Causes and Response,” on Tuesday, Aug. 26 to discuss the factors fueling the recent influx of unaccompanied minors from Central America and the legal, policy and social responses to this humanitarian crisis.

On Monday he found out he won the Julio Palmaz Award for innovation in health care and biosciences, and on Thursday the University of Texas replaced him, confirming his successor, Admiral William McRaven.

When Salina Vang begins her studies at the University of Minnesota-Duluth next week, loans and scholarships will cover most of her expenses. (FRANK PORTER GRAHAM CHILD DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE) -- A new summary of 12 years of research on North Carolina’s pre-kindergarten program for at-risk 4-year-olds shows that “dual-language learners” make the greatest academic progress in the program. According to the report from UNC's Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (FPG), while students in NC Pre-K advance across all spheres of learning, the program is especially beneficial for the state’s dual-language learners.

To COEHD Faculty and Staff - As part of the start to the new academic year, I want to share with you an upcoming event sponsored by the Faculty Center that you and your students may be interested in. The Faculty Center is sponsoring Keynote speaker, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, President of the University of Maryland at Baltimore County. It is one of the leading institutions in helping first generation and students of color to get a higher education and in particular, in the STEM fields and Dr. Hrabowski is one of the most prominent higher education leaders.
He will be speaking on Thursday, September 25th in the Ground Floor Auditorium of the Main Building at the Main Campus starting at 6pm. Prior to his talk, we are hosting a reception for faculty only in the Faculty Center from 5pm.
You will see notices in the coming weeks, but I wanted to give you an advance notice in case you want to plan ahead and bring your class. If you want to bring your students, please do, but contact Dr. Mary Dixson at mary.dixson(a)utsa.edu<mailto:mary.dixson@utsa.edu> and let her know that you are bringing your class and how many students will attend. College athletes who have abusive coaches are more willing to cheat in order to win than players with more ethical coaches, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association and based on surveys from almost 20,000 student athletes at more than 600 colleges across the country.

(TPR) -- The East education center, off Eisenhauer Road, is one of two new centers opening this fall. Construction workers hurried up and down the halls this week, carrying drills and popping in and out of classrooms. Ice Bucket Challenge

Before we get started with Roadrunner Days, everyone is invited to this afternoon to watch President Romo take the Ice Bucket Challenge. Late last week City Councilman Ron Nirenburg took the challenge and upon completion, named Romo as one of his follow-on to the challenge. Join Rowdy, faculty, and staff at 2:30 p.m. in the Sombrilla Plaza to cheer him on.
The big question is "who will President Romo name as his follow-on to the challenge?" Vice-Presidents? Student Leaders? College Deans?

More than $750,000 Given to Collaborative Research
The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio announced the awarding of more than $750,000 in grants through the San Antonio Life Sciences Institute (SALSI) Innovation Challenge.
The Innovation Challenge funds collaborative studies, with a focus on public health issues and diseases of global impact. Funding will support early and conceptual stages of project development. Awardees in this grant cycle are studying immunity, microorganisms and cancer.

It's All About The Blast
Blast explosions have been the primary cause of morbidity and mortality in military personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition to being the primary cause of traumatic burns and amputations, blast exposure is the primary cause of combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
This presentation will review the symptomatology, etiology, and epidemiology of PTSD and TBI after blast exposure. It will also review the research opportunities at UTHSCSA and UTSA to examine the diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, and treatment of PTSD and TBI in military service members and veterans.

Congratulations to UTSA Inventors whose patents issued! The average time from disclosure to a patent being granted is about 5 years. Inventor participation is required throughout the entire life of the invention. COEHD Colleagues:
We are still accepting applications for graduate students interested in serving as Graduate Assistants in our department for the fall 2014 semester. Please forward this information and attachment to graduate students in your department who might be interested in this employment opportunity.
We seek candidates who have an interest in gaining experience in a higher education setting and assisting in conducting research related to educational leadership. This assistantship requires an individual who has a strong work ethic, strong organizational and communication skills, and the ability to maintain flexibility on the job.
Working directly with one or two ELPS faculty, graduate assistants will assist faculty 19 hours per week during the duration of the assistantship. Assistance with other appropriate departmental activities is also required. These other activities focus on academic issues related to graduate study and/or administrative assistance for departmental and faculty activities.
Graduate assistants will be paid 10-12 dollars per hour (19 hours/week) and are non-benefits eligible. Assistants must be unconditionally admitted as graduate students at UTSA and maintain "good standing" as defined by the UTSA Graduate Catalog. Assistants must also enroll in no less than 6 semester credit hours of graduate coursework during the semester.
