UTSA College of Public Policy (COPP) to host lecture on paramilitary violence featuring Canadian scholar Jasmin Hristov, Nov. 3
The UTSA College of Public Policy will present a lecture featuring Jasmin Hristov from the University of Toronto at the UTSA Downtown Campus, Thursday, Nov. 3, 2016 from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. Hristov will give a presentation on paramilitary violence and how is it being used as a tool of economic globalization. She will offer current examples of paramilitary groups in different parts of Latin America. In Hristov's abstract, she explains paramilitarism as a hybrid and complex type of politically-motivated violence involving non-state actors and state agents. Paramilitary groups have played an increasingly important role in contemporary armed conflicts as well as violent social environments. Paramilitary groups have engaged in some of the most horrifying human rights violations. This phenomenon has been poorly under investigated and largely misunderstood. Join the College of Public Policy in the Buena Vista St. Bldg., Aula Canaria Lecture Hall (BV 1.328) for an enlightening discussion on the proliferation on the Political Violence of Global Capital: Dispossession and Repression in the Global South. Event is free and open to the public. Parking available in Lot D-3 under the I-35 bridge in unmarked spaces only.
Hristov is a Canadian scholar an author of the books Paramilitarism and Neoliberalism: Violent Systems of Capital Accumulation in Colombia and Beyond (Pluto Press 2014) and Blood and Capital: the Paramilitarization of Colombia (Ohio University Press 2009). Her work has also been featured in: Journal of Peasant Studies; Latin American Perspectives; Journal of Peacebuilding and Development; Labour, Capital and Society; and Social Justice.

Professional Development Workshop Institute of Texan Cultures
Use a bit of novelty to get your students excited about geography! The Texas Alliance for Geographic Education is coming Saturday, November 5 to teach us about their Giant Traveling Map of Texas. This awesome program rents out giant 12.5 - 20 foot vinyl floor maps that your students can use to explore the cultures, geographies, and history of Texas in interactive, physical, and spatial activities. Join us on Saturday, November 5, and the TAGE team will demonstrate the different ways to utilize the map in your classroom and provide TEKs oriented learning materials. Come and explore Texas in a whole new way!
Rental fees for the Giant Traveling Map are usually $50-$75 (depending on the size) but the ITC will be paying the rental fee for teachers who attend the workshop. We'll make sure you can bring the map to your classroom, for free!

Dr. Rosalind Horowitz, a professor in the Departments of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching and Educational Psychology, has been selected to serve on the Editorial Board, representing the College of Education and Human Development, for the new UTSA Journal of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Works. Dr. Horowitz has collaborated with undergraduates in the COEHD, on research on persuasion of seven-year olds and presented this research at The UTSA Undergraduate Research & Creative Inquiry Showcase on April 21, 2016. This work has been accepted for the first issue of the new undergraduate research journal.

The deadline to submit a proposal to the 2017 Texas Language Education Research Conference (February 17-18, 2017) is Monday, October 31. For more information, visit http://www.texler.org/call-for-proposals1.html
Interested participants are encouraged to submit a proposal for one of the following session types:
60-minute Poster Presentation
Posters will be on display during the conference, and a separate conference session will be dedicated to presenters to explain their work and answer questions. Posters can be used to gain valuable feedback on theses, dissertations, or research. This is a good format for describing a work in progress, or a new process or idea.
20-minute Research-Based or Practice-Oriented Presentation
• Research-Based Presentation: A 20 minute formal talk addressing a small audience followed by a 5 minute Q&A/discussion. It might be original empirical research as well as an original theoretical investigation.
• Practice-Oriented Presentation: A 20 minute practical or “hands-on” presentation by the presenter(s) followed by a 5 minute Q&A/discussion. It can be a practical demonstration of a theory, or an application of pedagogical methodology still in the developmental stage.
45-minute Practice-Oriented Presentation
• Workshop: A 45 minute practical demonstration of a theory or an application of a pedagogical methodology, followed by a short Q&A/discussion. Presenter(s) should engage the audience through experiential learning techniques

Dr. Carole Basile, Dean of the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University is seeking an outstanding leader for the position Director of the Division of Teacher Preparation. Working with faculty on three campuses and 75 field-based sites throughout Arizona, the Director has opportunities to continually innovate to improve existing teacher education programs, lead cutting edge research in teacher education, and provide leadership in teacher education across the state. This is a full-time position with faculty appointment at the rank of Professor. The Director has overall responsibility for the administration and coordination of operational matters pertaining to the Division's programs and functions and is supported by personnel, systems and facilities in the College and the University. Dear COEHD Faculty,
The U. T. System is seeking nominations for the 2017 Regents' Outstanding Teaching Awards. Per Steve Leslie, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, "The awards will recognize faculty who deliver the highest quality of undergraduate instruction, demonstrate their commitment to teaching, and have a history and promising future of sustained excellence with undergraduate teaching." Tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure-track award recipients will receive $25,000 each.
The University of Texas at San Antonio will submit a cadre of tenured, tenure-track, and non-tenure-track/adjunct nominees for consideration of the award. Therefore, each college will submit a maximum of the following numbers of nominees:

* Nominees must have at least three years teaching experience at the university level.
The nomination of strong candidates who may already have received teaching awards or teaching award nominations is encouraged.
Below you will find the COEHD timeline for the submission/review process. As you can see, the timeframe is very tight and the awards are quite large. Therefore, it is important that we adhere to the timeline.
The nomination process will be conducted in two phases:
Phase I:
1) Nomination packets should be submitted to Liliana Gutierrez (liliana.gutierrez(a)utsa.edu<mailto:liliana.gutierrez@utsa.edu>) in the COEHD-Office of the Dean no later than Monday, October 17, 2016.
All nomination packets must contain the following materials for Phase I review:
1. A completed application form (6 pages maximum) (attached),
2. A CV that emphasizes teaching accomplishments (maximum: 15 pages) and
3. Written statement delineating their philosophy of teaching (maximum: 3 pages, 12 pt. font).
2) Each college will identify their nominees and email their names to Dr. Nancy Martin by Wednesday, October 26, 2016. All notified nominees will submit their materials for Phase I review via email to Dr. Nancy Martin no later than 8:00am on Tuesday, November 29, 2016.
Phase II: The UTSA ROTA Selection Committee will determine the University's cohort of nominees who will develop a full e-portfolio that will be submitted for consideration at the U.T. System level. Center for Civic Engagement Roadrunners Engaged Ethical Photo Contest Center for Civic Engagement
This week the Center for Civic Engagement launched the annual Roadrunners Engaged Ethical Photo Contest<https://www.utsa.edu/community/cce/news-events/roadrunnersengaged.html>. This is a contest where we encourage all of our UTSA students, faculty and staff to showcase their community work and involvement via social media.
To enter the contest:
Upload your picture to Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, include a brief caption of the type of service being performed and use hashtag #UTSAengaged. Increase your chances of winning by tagging our handle @UTSAengaged. Register student organizations can also submit a photo, but it must come from the organization’s unique social media accounts.
All eligible photos must follow the following guidelines:
- Submit photo from an Instagram, Twitter or Facebook account
- Use #UTSAengaged in order for your photo to be entered in the contest
- Tag @UTSAengaged to increase your chances of winning
- Tag the location of the service event on your picture
- UTSA student organizations must submit photo from their official social media account
- Short accompanying description must be included with photo to make it eligible for contest entry
- No children should be visibly recognizable in the photo due to privacy and confidentiality

UTeachSA meeting invitation

In a new effort to address the needs for highly qualified STEM teachers, UTSA joined the UTeach Institute this year. Our very own UTeachSA program proudly serves the first cohort of 14 students and is in the process of adapting the sequence of course work to meet the needs of our local community. You are invited to join us in developing the program into an exemplary model integrating technology, pedagogy, and content into a culturally grounded holistic experience for our students.
The first meeting, open to all of COEHD, will take place in UC 2.01.24 (Mesquite Room in the UC) on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, from 1-2 pm.
