This should be fun and I hope some of the COEHD faculty are able to attend to connect or reconnect with colleagues. We do ask everyone to please remember to rsvp at the link in the flyer so that organizers can plan for the right number of people.
PS. The event is open to faculty from both the Main and Downtown campuses, but is at UTSA Downtown at the SW room (Durango Building).

Curriculum Matters: Race, Place, and Belonging “South” of the Border
Curriculum matters. Race matters. Place matters. Epistemologies matter. And matter also matters of indigeneity, immigration and epistemicide—of the South, at the borders, and beyond. Through this year’s conference theme—inspired, too, by the place of our convening and work of our colleagues (t)here; we invite participants to inquire, critique, ponder, dream, converse and create together through and from attention to these matters. Herein, we aim to not only continue from last year conversations regarding our ethical, and historical, engagements (AAACS 2016), but also to further those of our affiliate and sister organizations respecting the current tasks of the curriculum theorist (IAACS 2015), where curriculum theory and its labor, in fact, stand in the present moment (Bergamo 2016)—as well as in those to come; and demands to “colour” curriculum, interrogating places therein of power, privilege and supremacy (C&P 2016). We, too, seek responsiveness to/in a contemporary scene wherein much is contested, conflicted, complexified, and produced as nonexistent among us, particularly perhaps in the U.S./“America”, as pertains to race, place, indigeneity, immigration and epistemology—especially concerning difference, equity, solidarity and social and cognitive justice; and possibly no more so than in the “othered” South.
For example, while restorations of particular nations of the Global North have been acknowledged and taken up—and this, via the curriculum—in Canada, which necessarily involves listening to and learning from indigenous knowledges (the fruit of which was so beautifully shared at IAACS 2015), as well as in Australia (the place of our upcoming IAACS 2018 convening); such efforts are virtually nonexistent in the US, where one could argue indigeneity is largely still rendered invisible and thus inarticulable. And we suffer still in this context without any redress—with even much repressive regress—respecting generations of racial violence, suffering and oppression. Such questions too might be brought to bear at the borders, as it were, liminal spaces and fluid if not fractured places wherein epistemologies of the South, and of language and of citizenship, are deeply implicated, and such also with respect to education, curriculum and pedagogy.
We welcome, of course, as always, proposals on any current curriculum studies scholarship, and encourage provocative, stimulating and surprising conference formats; critical and creative conversations among us that may initiate healing and transformation, and illumine new paths and possibilities for us from within our midst.

This forum is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to share their research from a class project, thesis or dissertation, a work in progress, work with a faculty member, or research that has been previously presented elsewhere. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Undergraduate, Masters, and Doctoral. First place winners in each category will receive $500, Second place winners will receive $400 and Third place winners will receive $300.

Shuttle service from both the Main and Downtown campuses is being provided for all faculty participants. Details about the shuttle service will be included in the Faculty Participants Instructions and will be sent out by the Special Events Center closer to the ceremony.
We have a limited number of Regalia sets in the Dean's Office that can be borrowed by the junior faculty. Please let me know by Friday, December 2nd, if you would like to borrow regalia. If we still have regalia after this date, the senior faculty can then borrow.

The Office of Research Support would like to invite you and your colleagues to attend the following workshop:
Planning the Evaluation of Sponsored Research Projects
Date: Friday, November 11, 2016
Time: 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Location: UTSA Main Campus, JPL Assembly Room (JPL 4.04.22)
Description: Kurt Steuck, PhD, an external evaluator on several UTSA STEM education projects, will conduct a professional development workshop on planning the evaluations of sponsored projects. The overall goal of the workshop is to increase UTSA's capacity to create the evaluation plans for proposals being submitted to Federal agencies, such as the National Science Foundation, and non-Federal funding agencies. At the end of the workshops, attendees will be more able to:
* Draft the required evaluation sections for the body of a proposal
* Draft a more detailed evaluation plan for the supplemental documents
* Estimate the costs for the project evaluation
* Interacting with an external evaluator, if one is needed

Fall 2016 Commencement

Attached you will find information regarding the UTSA Fall 2016 Commencement in the Alamodome. The Memo from the Dr. Agrawal, Regalia Rental information and Faculty Response Card are attached for your review and response to the Dean's Office, Attention: Priscilla Marquez, by Monday, November 28th. It is important to return the response card if you will be attending Commencement.
Commencement will be divided into two ceremonies. You will be expected to attend only the ceremony on Saturday, December 17 at 10:00 a.m.

Shuttle service from both the Main and Downtown campuses is being provided for all faculty participants. Details about the shuttle service will be included in the Faculty Participants Instructions and will be sent out by the Special Events Center closer to the ceremony.
We have a limited number of Regalia sets in the Dean's Office that can be borrowed by the junior faculty. Please let me know by Friday, December 2nd, if you would like to borrow regalia. If we still have regalia after this date, the senior faculty can then borrow.

Sixth Annual Student Research Colloquium

Dear COEHD Faculty and Students,
We are pleased to announce that the College of Education and Human Development will be hosting the Sixth Annual Student Research Colloquium on November 18, 2016 in the HUC Ballroom 1. This forum is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to share their research from a class project, thesis or dissertation, a work in progress, work with a faculty member, or research that has been previously presented elsewhere. Prizes will be awarded in three categories: Undergraduate, Masters, and Doctoral. First place winners in each category will receive $500, Second place winners will receive $400 and Third place winners will receive $300.
Please encourage your students to participate in this worthwhile event. It is an opportunity to showcase the excellent work being done by COEHD students and is a good way to practice presentation skills. A bonus for the undergraduates who participate is that they can get valuable feedback from this event and then submit their poster again to participate in the University-wide UTSA Undergraduate Research and Creative Inquiry Showcase. More information about the Showcase will be provided at the Colloquium.

* Advancing Globalization
* Community Engagement: A second Community Engagement award has been added to recognize non-tenure-track faculty.
* Core Curriculum
* Performance, Creative Production, or Other Scholarly Achievement
* Research Achievement: For 2017, the Research Achievement award has been expanded to include subcategories for STEM-related research and that in other disciplines.
* Teaching Excellence
* University Service

Specific, relevant information, including each award's expressed purpose, materials to be submitted for each nominee's portfolio, and a list of former award recipients are available online. The Center for Civic Engagement has a community-based work-study program, Rowdy Corps, where we place students with a non-profit agency for one to two years to increase students' civic responsibility and help them develop professional skills. The program has 15 community partners and 14 students participating.
I wanted to reach out to tell you about the position in KRLN Education Department<https://utsa.joinhandshake.com/jobs/481701>. We think that maybe one of the COEHD students could be interested. Pay is $11.50 per hour and students must be work-study eligible under UTSA.
