DEVELOPING ASSESSMENTS AND RUBRICS

Assessments and rubrics are tools used to determine levels of students' mastery of course content. This workshop will guide participants through the process of developing rubrics and evaluation tools that will help to assess student learning. By the end of this workshop students will have learned the steps in identifying the criteria regarding content to be assessed, describing levels of student mastery, and using these elements to develop purposeful assessments and rubrics. This workshop is open to all graduate students and teaching assistants eager to learn more about the development of assessments and rubrics in university-level classrooms.

Glenda Bivens, a graduate of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies' M.Ed. in Higher Education program, went on to get her doctorate at Iowa State University. After she graduated, her dissertation was awarded the Dissertation of the Year from the Council for the Study of Community Colleges. The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is pleased to announce the AERA Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop<http://www.aera.net/Professional-Opportunities-Funding/AERA-Funding-Oppor...>. The workshop, led by junior and senior scholars, will give fellows an overview of how education research is designed across fields, how quantitative and qualitative research methods are used in studies, and how research is applied to education policy and practice. Senior researchers and faculty from both academic institutions and applied research organizations (i.e., The American Institutes for Research, Educational Testing Service, the College Board, and the Urban Institute) will introduce education research as a field and share their area of expertise and knowledge with the fellows. As part of the workshop activities, the fellows will attend pre-selected paper sessions and presentations during the AERA Annual Meeting. Workshop activities will also focus on exploring graduate education, applying to graduate school, and beginning a career in education research.
Dates: The Workshop activities will take place Friday, April 13th through Sunday, April 15th during the AERA 2018 Annual Meeting in New York, New York.
Award: Fellows will participate in the Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop during the AERA 2018 Annual Meeting in New York, New York. They will also have the benefit of a distinguished mentor as part of the award. The award includes conference registration and two nights of lodging. The fellows and/or their home institutions are responsible for transportation costs to New York, New York.
Eligibility: Candidates may come from a broad range of fields across the arts and sciences. Underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities and women are encouraged to apply. Candidates must be:
Students in their sophomore, junior, or senior year of college in good academic standing.
Interested in pursuing a graduate or professional degree that can lend itself to education research areas such as children and youth, school and schooling issues, higher education, education policy, student achievement, curriculum and instruction, education psychology, or education leadership.
Where to Apply: AERA will accept applications via the online application system (AERA Undergraduate Research Training Workshop Application<http://forms.logiforms.com/formdata/user_forms/7993_9562493/68367/page1.h...>). Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee of senior scholars and researchers. All materials must be received by 11:59pm (Pacific Time) on November 15, 2017.

The City’s Department of Arts & Culture on Wednesday recognized one local arts organization and five renowned San Antonio creatives for their contributions in the fields of music, dance, literature, visual arts, and arts administration. Musician Vernon “Spot” Barnett, visual artist César Martínez, dancer Belinda Menchaca, arts administrator Paula Owen, poet Carmen Tafolla, and the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts are this year’s Distinction in the Arts honorees. “We want to celebrate San Antonians for using the arts to tell our story, to be our beacons, and to preserve cultural legacy for generations to come,” Councilman Roberto Treviño (D1) said at Centro de Artes before naming the honorees.

San Antonio is launching its first Museum Month this October. Throughout the month locals who are members of any participating area museum can gain access (or special admission deals) to others. There are also plenty of special events and exhibitions throughout October. The partnership kicks off on Sunday, Oct. 1, with a Family Day at the San Antonio Museum of Art and a monk blessing of the rare sand mandala at the Institute of Texan Cultures. Other events include special exhibition openings at Blue Star Contemporary, movies at Mission Marquee, Sunday jazz at the Witte and lectures and educational workshops at multiple institutions.

Working with Stone will be Phillip Schnarrs, assistant professor of kinesiology, health, and nutrition at the University of Texas at San Antonio and co-director of the South Texas Consortium for HIV and STI Research; and Robert Salcido, board chair of the Pride Center and regional field coordinator for Equality Texas, a statewide LGBTQIA rights advocacy group. All team members will receive $25,000 per year to support approximately one day per week working in the program while also maintaining their regular jobs. The program also provides up to $125,000 in funding to support projects, including graduate and undergraduate assistants.

What began as a petition calling for more Hispanic and Latino representation in the mid-90s is now a full-service resource center in a prominent space in San Antonio's iconic Central Library. The Latino Collection features Spanish and English language editions of more than 10,000 books and printed materials. Local creatives who have served as cultural ambassadors for San Antonio – like Texas Poet Laureates Carmen Tafolla, Laurie Ann Guerrero and Texas Medal of Arts honoree John Phillip Santos – have supported the collection over the years. Previously housed in a cramped section on Central Library's sixth floor, the collection was recently moved to a prominent area on the first floor.

Applied Linguistics/TESL
The Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies in the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Texas at San Antonio seeks an assistant professor in the area of applied linguistics/TESL to begin Fall 2018, pending budgetary approval. We seek a scholar with a strong focus on an area in applied/educational linguistics directly related to TESOL. Areas include, but are not limited to K-12 EL contexts, L2 pedagogy and technology, second language acquisition, language policy, language assessment, sociolinguistics, and/or research methods in applied linguistics.
The department offers a Ph.D. in Culture, Literacy, and Language, a MA in Teaching English as a Second Language, a MA in Bicultural-Bilingual Studies with concentrations in bilingual education and bicultural studies, a graduate certificate in TESL, and a BA in Mexican American Studies. It also provides undergraduate and graduate programs for teacher certification as well as support courses for other programs in the University.
Responsibilities include: Teach graduate and undergraduate courses, advise masters and doctoral degree students, pursue an active research agenda, and contribute to the university and community through service activities.
For Assistant Professor:
Required Qualifications: Doctorate in Applied Linguistics, Educational Linguistics, Language & Literacy, Education or an appropriate discipline. University-level teaching experience. Research publications indicating a strong research agenda. ESL/EFL teaching experience.
Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, experience advising graduate students, proficiency in a language other than English. Evidence of securing grants. Experience or interest in quantitative research.
Appointment to begin Fall 2018, pending budgetary approval. Salary is competitive.

AERA Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) is pleased to announce the AERA Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop<http://www.aera.net/Professional-Opportunities-Funding/AERA-Funding-Oppor...>. The workshop, led by junior and senior scholars, will give fellows an overview of how education research is designed across fields, how quantitative and qualitative research methods are used in studies, and how research is applied to education policy and practice. Senior researchers and faculty from both academic institutions and applied research organizations (i.e., The American Institutes for Research, Educational Testing Service, the College Board, and the Urban Institute) will introduce education research as a field and share their area of expertise and knowledge with the fellows. As part of the workshop activities, the fellows will attend pre-selected paper sessions and presentations during the AERA Annual Meeting. Workshop activities will also focus on exploring graduate education, applying to graduate school, and beginning a career in education research.
Dates: The Workshop activities will take place Friday, April 13th through Sunday, April 15th during the AERA 2018 Annual Meeting in New York, New York.
Award: Fellows will participate in the Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop during the AERA 2018 Annual Meeting in New York, New York. They will also have the benefit of a distinguished mentor as part of the award. The award includes conference registration and two nights of lodging. The fellows and/or their home institutions are responsible for transportation costs to New York, New York.
Eligibility: Candidates may come from a broad range of fields across the arts and sciences. Underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities and women are encouraged to apply. Candidates must be:
* Students in their sophomore, junior, or senior year of college in good academic standing.
* Interested in pursuing a graduate or professional degree that can lend itself to education research areas such as children and youth, school and schooling issues, higher education, education policy, student achievement, curriculum and instruction, education psychology, or education leadership.

COEHD Faculty Research Awards
2017-2018 Academic Year
Overview
The COEHD Faculty Research Awards Committee is now accepting research grant proposals for the 2017-2018 academic year. Please read these guidelines carefully.
The primary purpose of the Faculty Research Awards program is to provide priority funding to conceptually and methodologically well-designed research proposals from junior faculty in the form of seed grants to further develop and enhance their research agendas. The Committee is accepting research proposals with budgets up to $5000.
Senior faculty may be included in collaborative proposals where the lead is taken by a junior faculty member(s) and senior faculty are collaborators in the research. It is hoped that the Faculty Research Awards will provide the impetus for future, and much larger, research efforts supported from external funding sources. Recipients will create a poster display of their scholarly findings and will turn in a final financial report at the end of the award period.
Guidelines for Research Proposals
· All tenure-track faculty are eligible to apply, except those who received a COEHD Faculty Research Award during the 2016-2017 academic year.
· Adjunct faculty may be included in proposals. However, only tenure-track faculty can serve as Principal Investigators.
· Preference will be given to conceptually and methodologically well-designed proposals with potential for publication or grant application.
· Applicants wishing to build on previously funded research must distinguish how the proposed research builds on rather than duplicates previously funded activities.
· Proposals must adhere to all formatting guidelines, including provision of a “blind” copy, outlined below. Those that do not will be eliminated from further review.
· All funds must be spent during the current fiscal year and all funds must be exhausted by July 31, 2018. Any unused funds after that date will be swept by the Dean’s Office.
Criteria for Assessing Research Grant Proposals
* Clearly stated purpose of the study
* Research questions that link both theoretical framework and methodology
* Clearly defined theoretical framework and methodology
* Clear indication of potential contribution to one’s field
* Articulated goals for future grant activity
* Clearly defined timeline for project activities
* Clearly defined use of project funds
Budget
Reasonable and necessary expenditures related to the research project are eligible for funding (i.e., travel to collect data, conduct research, and/or collaborate with other researchers; data collection instruments, etc.). However, there are certain limitations. Funds cannot be used for: (1) faculty salary, (2) food items, and (3) travel to disseminate findings at conferences. Lastly, if you need items such as voice recorders, video recorders or similar supplies, please check to see if they are available through your Department before requesting them in your budget. If you are requesting equipment and/or supplies that are not available in the department, provide a justification for their need.
Letter of Intent – The first step in applying for the COEHD Faculty Research Awards is to notify us of your intent to apply. LOIs should include your name, working title, and estimated budget. LOIs should be emailed to COEHDFacultyResearch(a)utsa.edu<mailto:COEHDFacultyResearch@utsa.edu> by October 2, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. You must submit the LOI by the deadline in order to be eligible to submit the full proposal. Upon receipt of your LOI, you will receive further instructions regarding CAYUSE routing and budgets.
Research Grant Proposal Instructions
Full Proposal - Your proposal should consist of the following five sections: Cover Page, Project Narrative, Budget, Budget Justification, and an Appendix. Detailed instructions on what to include in each of these sections is outlined below. Following creation of this full proposal, you will need to create a “blind” copy of the proposal, which will be free from personally identifiable information and will be provided to the committee for blind review (see instructions below)*. On the e-mail subject line, please type COEHD Faculty Research Award Application.
Cover Page: Includes Title of Project, PI Name, Phone Number, and Email Address
Project Narrative – limited to three pages-(references may be added in addition to the three-page limit), single-spaced with one inch margins, Times New Roman or Arial, no smaller than 11 point font, and should include the following:
* Statement of purpose
* Research questions
* Theoretical and methodological approach
* Contribution to one’s field
* Articulated goals for future grant activity
* Project timeline
Budget: The proposed budget should adhere to College guidelines. Please work with Jesse Hernandez (jesse.hernanez(a)utsa.edu) to develop a project budget using UTSA’s approved Excel budget spreadsheet which will be provided upon receipt of the LOI.
Budget Justification: Provide a rationale for each item listed in your budget request.
Appendix – Include references and any tables and figures in an appendix. The appendix should be no more than 2 pages.
Submission Process
After you have finalized all the required proposal components (Cover page, Narrative, Budget, Budget Justification, Appendix), combine them into one single pdf document and save it as “LastName_FirstName”. Then go back to your original documents and redact all personally identifiable information. Once that is completed, create another single pdf with your redacted documents and save it as “BLIND_LastName_FirstName”. Both documents are required for successful submission. The Author Identified version will be routed for approvals through the CAYUSE system and the “blind” copy will be given to the review committee. We are looking for a COEHD doctoral student to work with the African American Studies program housed in COEHD. This is a fully funded doctoral position that will provide salary and tuition and fees for academic year 2017-2018. The position involves both Research and Teaching opportunities.
Eligibility
1) Applicants must be current Ph.D. or Ed.D. student in The College of Education and Human Development. MA students in COEHD programs are also welcome to apply.
2) Applicants are preferred to have experience of the study/research that centers on or is related to Africa and the African Diaspora.
3) Applicants must be continuously enrolled as a full – time graduate student for the term of the award.
4) Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
Duties
1. Recipient will be working as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Fall 2017 semester assisting with grant proposal writing for the African American Studies program.
2. Recipient will be working as a Teaching Assistant for African American Studies program teaching one course for the Spring 2018 semester for AAS program.
3. Doctoral Fellow will report to the director of African American Studies Program.
4. Other duties as assigned.

Right now, children with autism in San Antonio may have to wait up to three years before receiving treatment. A new partnership between UTSA, Children's Hospital of San Antonio, and the Autism Treatment Center may cut that wait time dramatically. "Our goal is to assess and evaluate kids who we suspect could have autism," Dr. Andrew Martinez, Psychologist and Clinical Director of the Autism Clinic at The Children's Hospital of San Antonio said. The earlier that can happen, the better for both children and their parents. At the Autism Treatment Center of San Antonio, it's happening a lot sooner. Dr. Martinez said, "Research has shown if they get it early on they may not need certain services long-term."
