Dear COEHD faculty, Please help us announce this African American Studies Doctoral Fellowship opportunity to your current doctoral students. MA students who are interested are also welcome to apply. African American Studies Doctoral Fellowship Application Deadline: Sep. 15th 2017 We are looking for a COEHD doctoral student to work with the African American Studies program housed in COEHD. This is a fully funded doctoral position that will provide salary and tuition and fees for academic year 2017-2018. The position involves both Research and Teaching opportunities. Eligibility 1) Applicants must be current Ph.D. or Ed.D. student in The College of Education and Human Development. MA students in COEHD programs are also welcome to apply. 2) Applicants are preferred to have experience of the study/research that centers on or is related to Africa and the African Diaspora. 3) Applicants must be continuously enrolled as a full - time graduate student for the term of the award. 4) Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or above. Duties 1. Recipient will be working as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Fall 2017 semester assisting with grant proposal writing for the African American Studies program. 2. Recipient will be working as a Teaching Assistant for African American Studies program teaching one course for the Spring 2018 semester for AAS program. 3. Doctoral Fellow will report to the director of African American Studies Program. 4. Other duties as assigned. Application Requirements 1. Applicant Information: Provide your contact information, current status and current field of study. Provide details about your proposed dissertation research, relevant coursework, academic honors, pertinent teaching/employment experience and titles/citations of publications. 2. Two Letters of recommendation: a) Doctoral Mentor's Letter of Recommendation: Your faculty mentor/advisor will be asked to provide a letter of support that will assess your commitment to this TA/GRA position. b) Second letter of professional recommendation. The Council of the AERA established the fellowship program to provide support for doctoral dissertation research, to advance education research by outstanding minority graduate students, and to improve the quality and diversity of university faculties. This fellowship is targeted for members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders). This program offers doctoral fellowships to enhance the competitiveness of outstanding minority scholars for academic appointments at major research universities. It supports fellows conducting education research and provides mentoring and guidance toward the completion of their doctoral studies. Award Period Each fellowship award is for 1 year, beginning July 1, 2018 or later, and is nonrenewable. This fellowship program is intended as a write-up fellowship. Fellowships are awarded for doctoral dissertation research conducted under faculty sponsorship in any accredited university in the United States. Eligibility Eligible graduate students for the AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research will be at the writing stage of their dissertation by the beginning of the fellowship. The dissertation study should focus on an education research topic such as high stakes testing; ethnic studies/curriculum; tracking; STEM development; measurement of achievement and opportunity gaps; English language learners; or bullying and restorative justice. Applicants can come from graduate programs and departments in education research, the humanities, or social or behavioral science disciplinary or interdisciplinary fields, such as economics, political science, psychology, or sociology. Fellows are required to provide proof of advancement to candidacy at the beginning of the award period. Applicants must work full-time on their dissertations and course requirements and should be in the writing stage of their dissertation. The theme for 2018 will be “I Am Not Your Negro,” based on the recent film about James Baldwin. As the Brackenridge Endowed Chair in Literature and the Humanities, I am providing funding for films, panels, and speakers similar to what is provided for Women’s History Month. The mission for this Black History Month is to recognize and celebrate people of African descent’s contributions and causes by: providing space for educational events from a critical and culturally sustaining perspective; promoting a commitment to diversity, excellence, and collaboration; and aiming to achieve social justice and empowerment. Bernal Dear COEHD, We are saddened to learn that yesterday, September 1, 2017, Dr. Ernesto M. Bernal passed away at the age of 79 from Parkinson's Disease. Dr. Bernal was a former faculty member at UTSA, and husband of Dr. Carmen Tafolla (current BBL Professor of Transformative Children's Literature). Dr. Bernal was key in developing the BBL Program, and authored the first scholarly research on the Latino gifted child in the US. A prolific scholar and innovator in the fields of Bilingual Education, Gifted Education, and Analysis of Test Bias, he went against the ethnocentric zeitgeist of the 1960s and 70s, which focused on "the culturally-deprived Latino child"; he spent a lifetime changing this deficit perception and published extensively on the gifted Latino child. A former Dean of Education at UT Pan American (now UTRGV), Dr. Bernal, along with his wife, Dr. Tafolla, established a bilingual school for the gifted and creative child. Dr. Bernal's early years at UTSA were transformative for many students; Dr. Bernal was a contemporary of the now-famous Dr. Tomas Rivera, who also served on UTSA faculty and administration.
