Subject: Black History Month February 2018: "I Am Not Your Negro"
I am writing to invite you to share the attached information with students, faculty, and
staff for this first ever non-student organization offering of Black History Month at
UTSA. The theme for 2018 will be “I Am Not Your Negro,” based on the recent film about
James Baldwin. As the Brackenridge Endowed Chair in Literature and the Humanities, I am
providing funding for films, panels, and speakers similar to what is provided for Women’s
History Month. The mission for this Black History Month is to recognize and celebrate
people of African descent’s contributions and causes by: providing space for educational
events from a critical and culturally sustaining perspective; promoting a commitment to
diversity, excellence, and collaboration; and aiming to achieve social justice and
empowerment.
I invite you to the Black History Month Informational Meeting on Monday, September 18,
2017, 10:00 – 11:00 am, in MB 2.404, the English Department Conference Room. We will
discuss the theme and answer any questions about submitting proposals, co-sponsoring an
event, or funding.
Attached to this email are the film, panel, and speaker forms and the requirements for
each one. Proposals for the 2018 Black History Month are due Monday, November 6, 2017.
Please send completed electronic (preferred) proposals to
Sonja.Lanehart@utsa.edu<mailto:Sonja.Lanehart@utsa.edu> or hard copies of your
proposals to Sonja Lanehart, English Department, MB 2.314.
If you have any general questions about the meeting or the forms or if you’re interested
in co-sponsoring this effort with me, please email me
(Sonja.Lanehart@utsa.edu)<mailto:Sonja.Lanehart@utsa.edu)> or call me
(210-458-6610). We look forward to seeing you Monday, September 18, 2017, at 10:00 am.
Best regards,
sl

won't you celebrate with me
what i have shaped into
a kind of life? i had no model.
born in babylon
both nonwhite and woman
what did i see to be except myself?
i made it up
here on this bridge between
starshine and clay,
my one hand holding tight
my other hand; come celebrate
with me that everyday
something has tried to kill me
and has failed.
