* Dr. Ian Thacker (EDP) received the President’s Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award for Research Achievement, Tenure-Track
* Dr. Rachel Cruz (REGSS) received the President’s Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award for Excellence for Performance, Creative Production or Creative Work
* Special shoutout to Fernando Cordova, Student Development Specialist-Special Programs for the Honors College, and M.Ed. Higher Education Administration student, for receiving the Rising Star Award.

As the COEHD Student Success Center (SSC) celebrates three years of serving COEHD students in a variety of capacities to enhance their student success, the Center would like to provide a comprehensive review of the strides made, initiatives started, and students served within our COEHD Community. Our goal is to share our pillars behind all our programming, share connections the Center has made, and offer an opportunity for feedback and further opportunities for collaboration.
Please review the SSC Third Year Review to learn more about the progress made and intricacies behind the Center’s programming. We are asking for your input and suggestions during the final section of the Review. We appreciate all recommendations as we continue to grow in our identity and find our footing.

Dear COEHD Team,
Bonham Academy is a UTSA Lab School. They are currently planning an exciting Cinco de Mayo con Matemáticas family event and would love to explore ways UTSA might be able to support it. One of the key features of the event will be engaging families in hands-on cooking activities that highlight how math can be used in everyday life—specifically, in the kitchen!
Here’s a brief overview of the stations they are planning:
* Station 1A: Original recipe for flour tortillas
* Station 1B: Original recipe for picadillo
(At both, teachers will demonstrate how to use math in the kitchen with children)
* Station 2A: Doubling the flour tortilla recipe
* Station 3A: Halving the flour tortilla recipe
* Station 2B: Doubling the picadillo recipe
* Station 3B: Halving the picadillo recipe
They were wondering if UTSA might have a math professor who would be interested in participating in one of the stations—especially someone who enjoys making tortillas or picadillo! It would be a fantastic way to show families that math is not only relevant but also fun and delicious. After all the meals are done cooking, we’ll sit down and enjoy the food together as a community. We’re excited for this opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate culture through math and food. We’d love to hear your thoughts and ideas for how UTSA might be involved. Thank you both so much for your time and support!

Upcoming Accessibility Workshop

Hello,
On Friday, May 2 from 10-11 am the UTSA Digital Accessibility Team will be hosting a training titled, “A Practical Introduction to Title II Compliance” via Zoom for COEHD.
This session is open to all faculty and staff, and we strongly encourage your participation. You will gain foundational knowledge on accessibility practices that support ADA Title II compliance, with a focus on practical tools and strategies.

* Using accessibility checkers in Microsoft and Canvas
* Checking and understanding your accessibility score
* Small wins for your course

Dr. Nájera is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Riverside. Her research explores the intersections of race, immigration, and education.She is the author of The Borderlands of Race: Mexican Segregation in a South Texas Town and her latest book, Learning to Lead: Undocumented Students Mobilizing Education (Duke University Press, 2024), highlights the stories of undocumented youth who emerge as community advocates during college.
Dr. Nájera is also co-PI of the Mapping Chicana/Mexicana Organizing in the Borderlands oral history project. Her work has appeared in journals such as Chicana/Latina Studies, The Oral History Review, and Anthropology and Education Quarterly, and she has contributed to The LA Times on issues related to immigration.

The University of Texas at San Antonio and UT Health's PITCH Expanded Providers team would like to invite you to a FREE, virtual training “The Neurobiology of Addiction in Adolescents and the Role of SBIRT” with guest speaker Muhammad Ali Chaudhary, MD on Tuesday, June 24th, from 2-4pm CST.
Dr. Chaudhary is an Adolescent Addiction Medicine Physician and Assistant Professor at UT San Antonio who specializes in the transition of care for youth with substance use disorders. With extensive clinical and research experience and multiple peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Chaudhary brings valuable insights into evidence-based addiction treatment and policy.
We hope that you will join us on to learn about key aspects of adolescent brain development, the neurobiological underpinnings of addiction vulnerability in adolescents, the statistics on adolescent substance use in the United States, the implications of early screenings, brief interventions, and referrals for care for adolescents.
