Dr. Patricia Sánchez, associate professor in the Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, was recently awarded the Honorary Leon Jaworski Award for Teaching Excellence on June 18, 2015. The award is given each year at the State Bar of Texas Annual Meeting by the non-profit, Law-Focused Education, a branch of the Texas State Bar. Law-Focused Education provides resources that help teachers inspire and engage their students in the pursuit of civics education.

Six new research projects will receive $20,000 in seed funding from the Office of the Vice President for Research in FY 2016. The Grants for Research Advancement and Transformation (GREAT) funding will allow the researchers and their collaborators to conduct preliminary studies in new areas and assemble data that will position the research for competitive extramural funding in future years.

Dr. Lorena Claeys, executive director of the UTSA Academy for Teacher Excellence (ATE), will present at the 2015 National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Líderes Summit in Kansas City, Kansas. The NCLR Líderes Summit, part of the annual NCLR Conference, will bring together over 400 youth from around the country for four days of workshops and events geared towards their continued growth as young Latina/o leaders. Claeys will be joined by three undergraduate students from ATE.

For two decades, Texas has treated truancy as a criminal offense. That means most cases were prosecuted in adult courts where children, along with their parents, faced jail and fines of up to $1,500 for missing school — usually 10 or more unexcused absences. Texas lawmakers now say this policy went too far. So last week, Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, signed a law that no longer treats truancy as a Class C misdemeanor.

Time: 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.
Location: John Peace Library, Assembly Room (JPL 4.04.22). Guests of UTSA should parking in the Bauerle Road Garage. Parking instructions will be emails to all registrants and parking validation stickers will be provided at the registration table.

Workshop Coordinator: Paul Rad, Assistant Director of the Cloud Institute
Description: The University of Texas at San Antonio is one of five institutions nationwide partnering on a $10 million National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to create a cloud-computing testbed that will let researchers develop and experiment with new cloud architectures and applications. The NSFCloud project will support the design, deployment and initial operation of Chameleon, a large-scale testbed consisting of 650 cloud nodes and five petabytes of storage. All researchers that have computational or big data analytics needs in their research are encouraged to attend. Paul Rad, co-principal investigator for Chameleon and Assistant Director of the Open Cloud Institute at UTSA, will lead training and outreach efforts for the project.

Tyler Clementi was a Rutgers University student who committed suicide in 2010 after his roommate spied on him having a sexual liaison, broadcasting it to other students over social media and mocking him for his sexuality. Since then, the Clementi family has been committed to remembering Tyler’s life by committing resources to combating all forms of bullying. This Sunday, the Tyler Clementi Foundation unveiled a new campaign to stop bullying before it happens — on “Day 1.”

Shortly before former Gov. Rick Perry officially launched his second presidential campaign in Dallas on Thursday morning, his successor ended a long-criticized initiative from Perry’s tenure. Flanked by the heads of the state’s flagship public universities at the University of Texas at Austin, Gov. Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 632, which eliminates a controversial startup investment fund long touted by Perry and directs much of its money to a new researcher recruitment effort.

When a remodeling crew at Emerson High School in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, uncovered slate chalkboards dating back to 1917 last week, teachers at the school were transported back in time and given a glimpse of how teachers taught their students nearly 100 years ago.

The Texas Legislature has approved a contentious proposal issuing A through F grades rating its public schools’ academic performance. The House voted 119 to 17 on Sunday to pass a compromise after both it and the Senate approved separate versions of the plan earlier in the session. It now goes to Gov. Greg Abbott to be signed into law.

Advocates are accusing schools across one of the nation’s largest states of using truancy laws to funnel kids with disabilities off their rolls. Thirteen school districts in Texas — including those in Austin, Houston, Fort Worth and San Antonio — are allegedly using truancy laws to absolve themselves of responsibilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, according to a complaint filed this week by the advocacy groups Disability Rights Texas, the National Center for Youth Law and Texas Appleseed.
