Looking for some great students and their stories -- transfer students and graduate students

The University's Director of Communications is working on a special summer project in hopes of profiling some "interesting students." We are looking for students with compelling personal or academic stories (much like the stories done each semester for commencement). This time, however, the focus is on transfer students and graduate students.
Does anyone in particular spring to mind? Do you have any suggestions? If so, please send the student's name, email and/or phone number, and a line or two about what makes the student interesting.

“You have to educate yourself about the culture before you can make art about the culture,” said Easy Lee of Third Root toward the end of the Black and Brown Sounds panel last Wednesday. Speaking to the beginnings of Third Root, Lee told the audience that only after his cohort Mexican Stepgrandfather, aka Dr. Marco Cervantes, put him in contact with Afromestizaje (Afro-Mexican) culture could he create the hip-hop displayed later in the evening.

The College of Education and Human Development’s (COEHD) Community Family Life Center has been renamed the Sarabia Family Counseling Center after the late Dr. Fermin Sarabia. The center, located on the UTSA Downtown Campus, provides free mental health services to the San Antonio community.

For nearly three weeks in May, 17 UTSA Honors College students, led by Honors College Dean Richard Diem and professors Wan Yao and Zenong Yin, traveled through China. UTSA students Salma Gomez and Zack Dunn kept a record of their experiences and impressions as they visited various cities, universities, and businesses.

Richard Diem, dean of the UTSA Honors College and professor of education, last week was awarded the Irving Morrisett Excellence in Social Science Education Award from the Social Science Education Consortium (SSEC). Diem received the award at the group’s annual meeting in Rome. He is the current president of the organization.

ILT graduate students seeking donations for non-profit<http://education.utsa.edu/news/article/ilt_graduate_students_seeking_dona...>
Graduate students from the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching (ILT) are collecting donations for unaccompanied migrant children in San Antonio as part of their service-learning course, C&I 5933.
For the last month, the students have been working closely with a local health services organization to provide aid to these migrant children. To continue their efforts, the students are collecting items to donate to the non-profit. These items include: female undergarments, hygiene products, stuffed animals, hair products and accessories, art and craft supplies, and journals.
A donation box has been set up in the ILT main office, located in the Main Building room 2.210 until July 8, 2014. All of the items donated are tax deductible.

(INSIDE HIGHER ED) — The U.S. Department of Education early Wednesday morning apologized for a tweet that some people found offensive because it appeared to mock low-income students.
On Tuesday evening, the Twitter account for the department's Office of Federal Student Aid sent out a message that said: "If this is you, then you better fill out your FAFSA."
It included a photo of a woman frowning with the caption, "Help me. I'm poor."

Education via culture seemed to be the theme of the evening, with Cervantes and UTSA's Mexican American and African American programs curating the panel of musicians and scholars. Water: A Living Lesson conference

The UTSA COEHD is co-hosting a water education conference this week for 200 area teachers with SAWS, SARA, and EAA. Attached is a program of all sessions, field trips, and presentations. You are invited to attend any of the sessions on any day, free of charge. The sessions on Wednesday and Thursday are at the DT campus, with field trips on Friday.
Also attached is more detail about the UTSA strand of the conference with presenters' names and session descriptions. The Dean has generously supported this conference with speaker funds. Ms. Paula Kelderman, from Chicago, will be here for all three days and her bio is also attached with more information about her three presentations/workshops during the conference. Megan Low was one of 16 student-athletes that received the Spring 2014 Conference USA Spirit of Service Award, the league office announced on Wednesday. Low, who has a 3.55 GPA in kinesiology, put together the best season of her career while excelling in the classroom and lending a helping hand in the San Antonio community.

(INSIDE HIGHER ED) Americans are donating more money to higher education than they were before the recession, a comprehensive report on charitable giving suggests.
The report, which the Giving USA Foundation released Tuesday, indicates that Americans donated a record $52.07 billion to education in 2013. Adjusted for inflation, this figure marks a 7.4 percent increase over 2012.

This week, NPR Ed's Eric Westervelt visited a special education classroom in New York City where iPads are being used in a novel way. Students with a range of severe disabilities, including developmental, mental, physical and autism spectrum disorders, are using apps alongside traditional instruments to help express themselves through music.

Not only does Friday land on the 13th this month, but there will also be a full moon in the night sky. Creepy?
Deeply rooted in Christian traditions and events (Christ was crucified on a Friday, the Knights Templar were rounded up on Friday the 13th), the "BAD LUCK" day can send some people scurrying while others can dismiss the notion with a hearty guffaw. However you feel personally about these two events, the Weather Network says the combination of a full moon and Friday the 13th is so rare it won't happen again until 2049, and considering all the factors that had to come together to make this rare occurrence, perhaps we should see it as lucky rather than unlucky.

Since May 2012, a group of students at UTSA has been receiving computer training from the College of Education and Human Development faculty, staff and students, but these students aren’t typical college students. They’re housekeeping staff members. And, many of them had never even been in front of a computer before they started these classes.

Hannah Douglas, a graduate of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) College of Education and Human Development (COEHD), was one of three applicants from across the nation accepted into the Doctorate in Child Development program at the Erikson Institute in Chicago. Douglas also received a three-year, full fellowship from the institute.
