I want to make you all aware of the heartbreaking loss of one our COEHD students, Alexia Rosales, to a horrible automobile accident this past week. Dr. Ryan has provided information below on Alexia, a GoFundMe page, and counseling support services that are available to faculty, staff, and students. We will pass on information regarding services as we learn more. Please keep her family in your thoughts.

Dr. Leslie Neely appointed as the Assistant Dean for Transdisciplinary Research Development

Dear Colleagues,
The College of Education and Human Development (COEHD) and the College of Sciences (COS) are pleased to announce that Dr. Leslie Neely will be appointed as the Assistant Dean for Transdisciplinary Research Development in both colleges effective January 16, 2025. This joint administrative appointment, which is the first of its kind at UTSA, will facilitate the exchange of ideas between COEHD and COS, particularly in the areas of human behavior, mental health, AI/machine learning, and neurodevelopmental disabilities.
Dr. Neely is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Psychology in COEHD and has been at UTSA since 2015. She is an accomplished scholar who has secured awards as PI and Co-PI totaling over $19 million . Her work focuses on the integration of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality, into interventions for persons with autism, intellectual, and developmental disabilities. She has served in various leadership roles in her time at UTSA, most currently as the Director of the Bank of America – Child and Adolescent Policy and Research Institute and Associate Director of the Brain Health Consortium. Her vast knowledge and skill in research and obtaining external funding makes her uniquely qualified for this role.

We are also excited to announce a Seed Grant Workshop and Teaming Lunch scheduled for January 17, 2025. This event provides an excellent opportunity for faculty to connect with potential collaborators from UTSA and researchers from the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). Faculty should register by January 10, 2025, to secure their spot!
Grants for Research Advancement and Transformation (GREAT): Sponsored by the UTSA Office of Research, this opportunity supports new areas of research for faculty at UTSA. The primary goal of these awards is to assemble preliminary data that can be used to seek extramural funding and advance UTSA’s institutional research excellence goals.
* Expected Number of Awards: Four (4) awards, up to $20,000 each.

For this cycle, UTSA and SwRI have agreed on the targeted areas of Biomedicine and Biotechnology; Artificial Intelligence / Data Sciences / Analytics; and Smart and Secure Manufacturing. The proposal must have a direct application to solving industrial, governmental, or societal problems.
* Expected Number of Awards: Two (2); Due to indirect cost rate variation between the institutions, each project will receive up to $50K to the UTSA PI and up to $75K to the SwRI PI.
