USLC Plática Series with Dr. Julieta V. García

The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, in collaboration with the Urban School Leaders Collaborative (USLC), is pleased to announce Dr. Julieta V. García as the final speaker for the USLC Plática Series. Dr. García is a trailblazer and mentor whose UTB and TSC Presidency spanned over 28 years. During her tenure, she was instrumental in developing and implementing innovative leadership models to address the rapidly changing landscape of higher education. Notably, she played a key role in establishing The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
In 2009, Time magazine recognized her as one of the Top 10 College Presidents in the U.S., and in 2014, Fortune magazine honored her as one of the World’s 50 Greatest Leaders.

We invite you to submit a proposal for the Teach, Reach, Inspire: Elevating Literacy Instruction Conference on July 30, 2025, at ESC-20 in San Antonio, TX. This event gathers K-12 literacy educators to share innovative strategies, research-based practices, and approaches to enhance literacy instruction.
Session Proposal Details:
* Length: 50-minute interactive sessions
* Suggested Topics: Science of Reading, early literacy, differentiation, technology integration, writing across the curriculum, comprehension strategies, culturally responsive practices, and more.
Proposals should include:
* Presenter contact information and brief biography

Announcement: Jeff Stover

It is with mixed emotions to announce that our Assistant Dean for Fiscal Administration, Jeff Stover, will be resigning from his role effective May 9. Since the day Jeff arrived, he never wavered from his desire to improve and modernize COEHD fiscal services. He was committed to fostering a people centered culture to managing fiscal affairs, which is one of Jeff’s special qualities. He was a brilliant thought partner who always seemed inspired by the complexities and challenges of higher education, never daunted, always providing unique perspective and sound budgetary advice. I know his presence and leadership in the college will be greatly missed. Please join me in congratulating Jeff and wishing him the very best as he transitions into the next chapter of his career.

COEHD Budget Reduction: Process

Dear faculty and staff –
As all of you are aware, all colleges are being asked to prepare for budget reductions of 4% in response to a projected shortfall in state appropriations and designated tuition for the FY26/27 biennium. This budget cut is considerable for our college and requires us to consider and weigh various options to reducing our expenditures. In planning and decisions moving forward, it will be important that all of you plan on participating in a process to help us think through strategies and solutions to contain our costs and maximize efficiencies wherever possible. The efficacy of the process will hinge largely on awareness to core principles relative to investing in our people, our commitments to students, advancing our research enterprise, and adapting to evolving conditions. It won’t be easy and will require creative solutions that potentially have impacts on operations across the college. President Eighmy outlined several areas for consideration including minimizing non-essential spending including travel and occasions and pausing hires or electing to not refill positions. Keep in mind the budget cuts apply only to specific funding sources (E&G) and not to grants (though F&A recovery will likely be impacted), gifts, and fee accounts.
Later this month, Jeff and I will be holding collegewide working meetings to solicit input and ideas from you. We are eager for constructive dialogue that aims for gathering richer context and brainstorming solutions to meeting the 4% reduction. Your voice matters. We look forward to engaging with each of you soon. Tami will be sharing more information on these working meetings shortly. Please reach out to me if you have any questions.

COEHD Flyer Approval Process and Branding Kit

Hello,
Starting today, the COEHD Communications team is launching a new flyer approval process, to help ensure all flyers meet branding and accessibility standards. Below is an overview of this process and attached you will find a detailed document outlining the purpose, steps, and helpful resources.
Flyer Submission & Approval Process
Step 1: Initial Review
* Flyers must be submitted for approval to COEHD Communications at coehdcomm(a)utsa.edu<mailto:coehdcomm@utsa.edu> at least 5 business days before distributing or posting.
* The COEHD Communications team will review your flyer within 48 hours and check for adherence to the following:
* UTSA and COEHD branding compliance
* Design clarity
* Accessibility features
Step 2: Feedback or Approval
* If the flyer meets all guidelines, it will be approved for distribution/posting.
* If revisions are needed, feedback will be provided with clear instructions for adjustments.
Step 3: Final Approval and Distribution
* Once adjustments have been made, resubmit an updated flyer for approval.
*Flyers that are created outside of COEHD do not need approval by COEHD Communications.
*Non-compliance with accessibility or branding standards may lead to delays in approval or rejection of the flyer.

We are integrating accessibility standards now to create a more inclusive environment and to prepare for Title II Accessibility requirements, which take effect in April 2026.
The second attachment in this email is the COEHD Branding and Accessibility Kit. This PowerPoint document covers official logos, the UTSA color palette, photos, new Adobe Express flyer templates, and additional information on how to make your flyers or materials accessible.
For the COEHD Lunch & Learn Series on Wednesday, April 16, from noon-1p.m. (JPL 4.04.12C Faculty Center Conference Room), we will walk through the branding and accessibility kit and answer your questions. The meeting will be in-person and on Zoom, the Zoom will be recorded and sent out.
Adobe Express
As an Adobe Creative Campus<https://provost.utsa.edu/academicinnovation/adobe-at-utsa/>, every student, faculty, and staff has access to Adobe’s full suite of creative cloud tools. Adobe Express is a user-friendly platform perfect for creating graphics, flyers, video, social media content from scratch or plug and play templates. The flyer templates in the branding kit were made using Adobe Express.

Please join us at our next MAS Community Scholars Plática Series. We're excited to feature one of our MAS professors, Dr. Sonya Alemán, who created this innovative MAS course at UTSA titled "Selena: A Mexican American Identity." Dr. Alemán will be presenting insights on the research process that informed her course and how Selena's life and career has influenced Mexican-American identity.
There will be a special Q&A along with a tribute to Selena's music featuring the lead singers from Las Chicas en 512 and Bidi Bidi Banda.
