Meet Sierra Luna. This UTSA kinesiology major is on track to travel to Richmond, Canada, to compete in the inaugural TAFISA World Martial Arts Games in September as part of the U.S. Martial Arts (U.S.M.A.) team.

Dr. Maricela Oliva, associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, was the principal editor of a special issue of the International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education. Oliva was joined by Dr. Harriett Romo, professor of Sociology and director of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Mexico Center, and Dr. Victor Zúñiga, director of research and extension at the Universidad de Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico, as guest co-editors.

UTSA hosts 70 Mexican students for summer English camp<http://education.utsa.edu/news/article/utsa_hosts_70_mexican_students_for...>
The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Office of ESL Services welcomed more than 70 undergraduate Mexican students and 14 faculty members from three Mexican universities at a special Welcome Ceremony on Friday, July 18, 2014. The students, which came from the Universidad de Guadalajara, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, and Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo, are participating in the Intensive English Summer Camp, which began on Wednesday, July 16, 2014.

Dr. Thelma Duffey, professor and department chair in the College of Education and Human Development’s Department of Counseling, was elected to serve as president of the American Counseling Association (ACA). Duffey will assume her role as the association’s 64th president on July 1, 2015.

Texas Education Commissioner Michael Williams has asked the U.S. Department of Education allow the state to delay a full rollout of a new teacher evaluation system and teacher's associations are applauding Williams' action. As per agreement with that allows Texas to opt out of sections of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, Williams was to design a teacher evaluation pilot program, test it using voluntary school districts, and then rollout the program after a year.
