JoAnn Browning, dean of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) College of Engineering, and Betty Merchant, dean of the College of Education and Human Development, have received a five-year $223,072 National Science Foundation grant to collaboratively reinvent higher education teaching methods in UTSA classes where the material has proved difficult for many engineering students.

International Society of Neurofeedback and Research
Students in the Department of Counseling's Neurofeedback Program published an anxiety treatment pilot study findings in the peer-reviewed NeuroRegulation journal, for which they won the student research presentation award at the 2015 conference of the International Society of Neurofeedback and Research. The award was presented to Stephanie Dreis, lead author, and two other student team members, Michael Fitzsimmons and Michael Russo.

Unidos Dual Language Charter School in Clayton County, Georgia is in the flight path of Atlanta’s airport. It looks like a growing number of America’s public schools: it’s a little rundown, and its students are brown — a little more than half African-American, just less than half Latino. For decades, psychologists cautioned against raising children bilingual. They warned parents and teachers that learning a second language as a child was bad for brain development. But recent studies have found exactly the opposite. The U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey shows growth in college degrees. The U.S. Census Bureau released a trove of new data Thursday from the American Community Survey. Among the findings: In 2014, 30 percent of adults 25 and older had a bachelor’s degree or higher. That’s up from about 28 percent five years earlier. Fall Inquiry Expo

I write this afternoon to personally invite you to the Interdisciplinary Studies Capstone Event, The Inquiry Expo! The event was started this summer as a means of allowing all students who complete the IDS 3713 course the opportunity to share their work publicly. In the past ILT has hosted a Colloquium where selected students would present, now the Expo is akin to the playoffs to get to the colloquium (that’s the extent of my sports analogy skill set). Mexico Center Fellowship Call for Applications DEADLINE DEC. 7

The Mexico Center is pleased to announce the 2015-2016 competition for the UTSA Mexico Center Educational Research Fellowship.
This fellowship provides financial assistance for student/faculty research projects on Mexico-related topics that need time in Mexico to do field work or consultation at a university or research center. The student grants, funded by the "Carlos and Malú Alvarez International Study Fund," are worth $4,000. They pay for student travel to Mexico, food, lodging, local travel, and supplies/materials needed to complete the project (i.e. data sets for quantitative analysis, transcribers/recorders for fieldwork, etc.) To encourage teams of faculty and student researchers, the Mexico Center will supplement the student grant with up to $1,000 for faculty members working with students on the projects (one faculty member per project). The funds from the Mexico Center for the faculty member supervising the project will pay for faculty travel to Mexico, food, lodging, and supplies/materials needed to complete the project. The grant cannot support faculty research alone. Funding is contingent upon travel approval by the UTSA International Oversight Committee (IOC) (Travel to borders states in Mexico is highly restricted).
Eligibility:
* Currently enrolled UTSA graduate or undergraduate students in any department or discipline
* Current UTSA faculty members
* Previous recipients of the Mexico Center fellowship are eligible to apply
The UTSA Mexico Center requests copies of the finished work and a financial report of expenses by the spring semester of 2017. A presentation of the research project will be scheduled once the report has been turned in.
Proposals are due by Monday, December 7, 2015. Please send the completed application form (in word or pdf format) as an attachment (via-email) to olivia.lopez(a)utsa.edu<mailto:Olivia.Lopez@utsa.edu>. An e-mail confirmation will be returned upon receipt of the proposal. Proposals will be reviewed by the UTSA Mexico Center Advisory Board.
Awards will be announced in late January 2016.
