The ATE makes a commitment to annually host the free, weeklong Summer Bridging Institute (ATE-SBI) for teacher candidates, novice teachers, and interested educators in an effort to recruit, support, and provide ongoing professional development to Latina/o teachers in our community. ATE-SBI provides networking opportunities for teacher candidates and teachers to learn, share, and support each other in a collegial atmosphere creating learning communities and communities of practice.
The live streamed announcement will be made by President Obama today Thursday, October 15, 2015 in Washington, D.C. around 4 PM EST.

The Office of Undergraduate Research is making available the following opportunities for our undergraduate students. Please share this information with our COEHD students.
1. UG RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES PORTAL: UG students of any discipline can now access thousands of global UG research & funding opportunities through the Office of Undergraduate Research Opportunities page: http://research.utsa.edu/academic-research/undergraduate/opportunities/.<http://research.utsa.edu/academic-research/undergraduate/opportunities/> Students create a profile (similar to Pivot for faculty funding opportunities) to focus their searches. Students will receive updates on new, related opportunities as well.
2. OFFICE OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP. The Office of Undergraduate Research offers scholarships for first-time researchers. Applications for spring 2016 awards are currently being accepted and the application deadline is November 23, 2015. The online application is accessible via the http://research.utsa.edu/academic-research/undergraduate/scholarship-appl.... Summer applications will open in early spring 2016. Students can only receive one such award while at UTSA.
3. Paid UNIVERSITY RESEARCH INTERNSHIP positions are still available for fall 2015. This collaborative effort between Student Affair's University Internship Program and the VPR's Office of Undergraduate Research. This program is available to underclassmen (no juniors or seniors) that demonstrate financial need (i.e., Work Study-eligible), with a 2.75 GPA, and are looking to gain practical research experience. Faculty or units can identify top-performing, eligible students or advertise their position on Rowdy Jobs through the UTSA Career Center. This program will pay 75% of each student's $9/hr for 19hr/week max. The requesting unit will pay only 25% of their student's salary. The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has received gifts and pledges of $180 million dollars in its inaugural capital campaign, We Are UTSA – A Top-Tier Campaign, exceeding its original goal by more than $60 million. Launched in 2009, the capital campaign’s initial goal was $120 million to support student scholarships, faculty and research initiatives, campus activities and community outreach programs. In early 2013, the university surpassed that goal and, with two years left in the campaign, set and exceeded a new goal of $175 million.

The Sam Houston State University Department of History is hosting an appearance for the Texas Poet Laureate, Carmen Tafolla on October 7th at the Woodlands campus and October 8th on the main campus at 11 a.m. in Academic Building IV room 202. As the state Laureate Tafolla is required to service the various communities throughout Texas, which is what brings her to Sam Houston State University. Carmen Tafolla is the current Texas Poet Laureate; she is an associate professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and additionally has written short stories, children’s books, one volume of non-fiction, five books of poetry, and seven screenplays.

Black Education Yesterday and Today

The African American Studies Program in the Consortium for Social Transformation, College of Education and Human Development launches Beyond February: 2015-2016 African American Studies Lecture Series. The focus of this year's lecture series is a critical exploration of African American education, culture, and life beyond the chronological timeframe designated for such considerations in the United States.
The inaugural lecture for this academic year, Black Education Yesterday and Today, features Dr. Hilton Kelly and Dr. David Stovall.
Dr. Kelly, Associate Professor and Department Chair, Educational Studies at Davidson College, is a sociologist of education, race and racism, and social memory with a research focus on the lives and careers of African-American educators in the United States. His current research project, however, examines the socio-legal and historical phenomenon of white faculty suing black colleges for "reverse discrimination." Dr. Kelly teaches courses in educational studies, sociology, and Africana studies, such as Schools and Society, Education in African-American Society, Growing up Jim Crow, and Critical Race Theory.
Dr. Stovall, Professor, Educational Policy Studies and African American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, , studies the influence of race in urban education, community development, and housing. His work investigates the significance of race in the quality of schools located in communities that are changing both racially and economically. From a practical and theoretical perspective, his research draws from Critical Race Theory, educational policy analysis, sociology, urban planning, political science, community organizing and youth culture.
The lecture will take place Tuesday, November 10, 6 pm in the Buena Vista Building, Downtown Campus. Students, faculty and community members are invited.
