ATE answered the call to action with the Annual Academy for Teacher Excellence: Summer Bridging Institute (ATE-SBI) committing over $500,000 to focus on Professional Development and Outreach, "Grow-your-own" initiative. The goal is to increase the number of Latina/o teachers in critical teaching areas by 80 (40 students from local high schools and 40 from local community colleges) in the next five years. The ATE makes a commitment to annually host the free, weeklong Summer Bridging Institute (ATE-SBI) for teacher candidates, novice teachers, and interested educators in an effort to recruit, support, and provide ongoing professional development to Latina/o teachers in our community. ATE-SBI provides networking opportunities for teacher candidates and teachers to learn, share, and support each other in a collegial atmosphere creating learning communities and communities of practice.
