Conventional wisdom suggests that the earlier a child begins instruction in a foreign language, the more proficient that child will be in the long run. Becky Huang, assistant professor of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies in the College of Education and Human Development at UTSA, recently put that notion to the test in her hometown of Taipei, Taiwan.

Nicole Alias Salis Reyes, a doctoral student in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, received the Taylor & Francis Past President Award for Outstanding Graduate Research for her work, "Using Higher Education to Build Nations: A Phenomenology of Giving Back Among Native College Graduates." She was one of four researchers to receive the award.

Despite the increasing emphasis on technology as a learning tool in the classroom, many school districts still aggressively filter the Internet that teachers and students can access. While the federal Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires that schools filter for pornographic images, many districts are over-filtering, blocking sites that can be used positively for education. There are a lot of myths about how tight these required filters must be.

San Antonio College officially marks the 90th Anniversary of its founding in September of this year. SAC started at a time when junior colleges were just gaining a foothold in education, and it is the oldest two-year college in Texas. Principal Christy Clark walks the halls of her school, observing all the activity around her. There’s trash and mess everywhere, the parking lot is a mudhole when it rains, and her faculty is nowhere to be found. Clark spent the first day of the current school year alongside Judson High School Principal Jesus Hernandez III, welcoming his Judson Rockets back from a long, hot summer. The next day, Clark returned to her school — still with no faculty, no students, no desks and no classes.

H-E-B is seeking nominations for its 2016 Excellence in Education Awards, cash prizes honoring teachers, principals, school districts, early childhood facilities and school boards. The program aims to highlight what works in education and reward passionate and creative educators for their work. Six winning teachers each will receive two checks, $5,000 and $25,000 for themselves and their schools. Two principals will receive $10,000 for themselves and $25,000 for their schools. Prizes of $25,000 go to a winning school board and an early childhood facility. One large school district will receive $100,000 and one small district will receive $50,000. Nominations can be made at www.heb.com/education through Nov. 1.
