(TPR NEWS) - It seems self-evident that parents, empowered by choice, will vote with their feet for academically stronger schools. As the argument goes, the overall effect should be to improve equity as well: Lower-income parents won't have to send their kids to an under-resourced and underperforming school just because it is the closest one to them geographically.

IRB Information Sessions

Dear COEHD Principal Investigators, Faculty, and Graduate Students:
The Office of Institutional Integrity is planning two educational sessions this spring semester focused on completing IRB forms for new submissions, continuing reviews, or modifications. One session will be provided at the main campus on February 5, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in the JPL Assembly Room 4.04.22 (Side A). A second similar session will be provided to PIs at the downtown campus on February 19, 2015 in Room 1.322 of the Buena Vista Building. The session will begin at 6:00 p.m. We are trying to reach as many students and faculty at each campus realizing that for some departments, day sessions are better while for other departments, evening sessions are more ideal. A second set of sessions will also be provided that focus on special issues that arise in some studies (e.g., special targeting of participants, special populations, non-human vs. human research, non-regulated vs. regulated research). These sessions will be offered in March 2015.
Last semester we responded to individual invitations by faculty to visit their classes and provide presentations on our new forms, procedures, and policies. We were overwhelmed by the number of requests with only a limited staff available to provide those presentations. We prefer to reach as many people as possible rather than the few in isolated classes. Please forward this announcement to all principal investigators, faculty, and graduate students in your respective Colleges and encourage them to attend.

The 2015 Factbook provides timely information about current Latino student educational achievement and establishes a baseline from which to measure performance over time. 2015 UTSA Black Faculty and Staff Association Knowledge Bowl

The 2015 UTSA Black Faculty and Staff Association Knowledge Bowl is fast approaching. The UTSA Black Faculty and Staff Association will host the 2015 Black History Knowledge Bowl on Wednesday, February 18 at 6:00p.m. in the University Center Denman Room UC 2.01.28. Please encourage your students to form a team and register to compete in the event. This event is open only to currently enrolled UTSA students.
The objective of the Knowledge Bowl is to foster an environment of interactive learning and expansion of historical knowledge of American history through the efforts of African American contributors. The Black History Knowledge Bowl is an official program during UTSA's Black History Month festivities.
Students of all backgrounds are encouraged to learn about innovative, musical, political, social, linguistic, and other contributions of African Americans that shape and support society as a whole today and affect the UTSA community culture. Students are empowered by identifying with historical figures from ethnic backgrounds of underrepresented populations.

Students, faculty, staff, and community members gathered in the Business Building on Monday, December 8, for the African American Culture, Leadership and Social Issues class, taught by Dr. Dorinda Rolle. The class, which hosted the Consortium for Social Transformation and the African American Studies Program’s first event in their Beyond February speaker series, featured a presentation from Tuskegee Airmen Inc. Central Region President, Marv Abrams, and two Tuskegee Airmen, Dr. Eugene Derricotte, USAF Col. (Ret.), and Mr. James Bynum, USAF Senior Master Sergeant (Ret.).

Global Latino Educational Advocacy Days
UTSA will host the 2015 Global Latino Educational Advocacy Days on March 26, 2015. The purpose of the Global LEAD Summit is to bring much needed attention and discussion to critical issues in Latino education worldwide. This year’s Global LEAD will focus in engaging dialogue in order to help create bridges between Latino Education in Latin American and the US. Representatives from several ministries of education will be in attendance. This global summit will include participants attending the event from across the country and the world via simultaneous live cast.

(TPR) - The charter school movement is built on the premise that increased competition among schools will sort the wheat from the chaff. It seems self-evident that parents, empowered by choice, will vote with their feet for academically stronger schools. As the argument goes, the overall effect should be to improve equity as well: Lower-income parents won't have to send their kids to an under-resourced and underperforming school just because it is the closest one to them geographically.
