Preventing Teen Suicide In The Age Of ‘13 Reasons Why’<http://tpr.org/post/preventing-teen-suicide-age-13-reasons-why#stream/0>
by JAN ROSS PIEDAD - TPR | Pub: 05/18
Suicide is the second leading cause of death in adolescents between the ages of 15 and 19. The Netflix adaptation of the book "13 Reasons Why" depicts the aftermath of a teen girl's suicide and the reaction of those who influenced her decision. The controversial nature of the story, plus news of the show's renewal for a second season, has drawn criticism about copycat deaths and misguided models for risky behavior, prompting a warning from the National Association of School Psychologists.

Do Fidget Spinners Belong in the Classroom? Teachers Are Divided<http://blogs.edweek.org/teachers/teaching_now/2017/05/do_fidget_spinners_...>
by KRISTINE KIM - Education Week Teacher | Pub: 05/16
Fidgets spinners are supposed to help students sit still and focus. But many teachers are saying it's having the exact opposite effect. Meant to help children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, anxiety, or other conditions relieve tension and focus better, fidget spinners have become a popular toy among children. But some teachers say they have been causing classroom disruptions, prompting bans and confiscations.
Parking: The Only Constant is Change<http://www.utsa.edu/campusservices/blog_5-17.html>
by CLAY HAVERLAND - Campus Services | Pub: 05/16
Changes are afoot for parking at UTSA. This summer brings the addition of new spaces and parking lots, and the not-so-temporary loss of others. During this process, we will also reallocate various space types to best serve the campus community. Add it all up, and you can expect a different UTSA parking landscape at the start of the 2017-18 academic year.

Dear Friends, During my 30-plus years in higher education, I’ve witnessed many milestones. I’ve celebrated the academic and research successes of my students and peers, and I’ve celebrated the success of collaborative initiatives to make education more affordable and accessible for Texans. I must confess, though, that nothing compares to the excitement I’m feeling as I get ready for UTSA Commencement this weekend. Our students have accomplished so much and I am so proud of them. You should be, too.

Moving on from UTSA
by Michael Jennings
Hello All:
I wanted to let everyone know that I will be leaving UTSA next month to start the next chapter in my professional life. I recently accepted the position of Chief Diversity Officer at Furman University<www.furman.edu> where I will also serve as a full Professor in their Department of Education. I have been at UTSA for 13 years and I am grateful for the opportunity for personal and professional growth that has come from my affiliation with COEHD. I will be in San Antonio until at least late June so I'm hoping that I will have a chance to see everyone face to face at least one more time. Thanks to each of you for your continued commitment to ensuring the continued excellence of our College of Education & Human Development!
Sincerely,

As the Texas House works to balance the state's budget, some lawmakers are attempting to abolish a tax – a source of revenue whose loss others fear could jeopardize public education to the tune of untold billions. Earlier in the legislative session, the Senate voted to eliminate the franchise tax – a tax on businesses that's based on gross receipts. The franchise tax brings in $8 billion, during each two year budget cycle. A large chunk of that revenue pays for public schools.

Those dishes were among the offerings at Ven a Comer, where diners feasted on modern interpretations of food and drinks from a special collection of Mexican cookbooks in a collaboration of chefs from San Antonio and Mexico. The culinary inspiration came from recipes out of the UTSA Libraries Special Collection of Mexican cookbooks, which feature the cuisine of Mexico, Texas, and the Southwest. One of the largest and most extensive of its kind in the country, the collection contains items dating from 1789 and the present, including handwritten recipe books providing an intimate view of domestic life and Mexican culinary culture.

Princess Leia helped a generation of Star Wars fans to see a woman as a different kind of heroine. After the sad and untimely death of Carrie Fisher, many have been revisiting the affect of her role in Star Wars. She delivered a powerful, life-long message about women, courage, power, humor, savvy, and intelligence. What does that have to do with school leadership? It can mean as much or as little as you like but the message and the moment can be captured and is important.
