This summer, the Center for the Inquiry of Transformative Literacies will be hosting the Roadrunner Readers Tutoring Program and the Young Writer's Camp at the UTSA Downtown Campus. The Young Writer's Camp is a place where emerging and fluent writers can practice and refine their writing skills, share with others, and grow as artisans and thinkers. The camp takes place from June 11-15 OR June 18-22, and is open to all writers ages 9-18 (rising 4th -12th grade). The Roadrunner Readers Tutoring is designed to help children who are reading below grade level. The program is open to children in grades 2nd -8th, and begins June 14. Paseo del Sur and Path Closures June 11 – December 31<http://education.utsa.edu/awards_announcements/article/paseo_del_sur_and_...>
A portion of the Paseo del Sur and the staircase south of the EB will be closed from June 11, 2018 through December 31, 2018, as part of the ongoing SEB project. During the closure, there will not be a continuous route along the Paseo del Sur from the Ford Avenue Lot bus stop to the ART and EB as well as the staircase between the ART and FLN - signage will be posted to assist with detours.
There are also plans to install a covered Paseo walkway and a temporary path northeast of the BSE at the end of August 2018 to mitigate the Paseo closure. These plans are contingent on construction progress and will be announced when finalized. For additional information, please reference the attached maps or contact the Facilities Service Center at 458-4262.

Dear Colleagues,
I am reaching out to see if you would be interested in meeting Professor Tan ( bio attached) , the Director of the National Institute of Education, Singapore.
He will be in San Antonio next week and has requested a visit to UTSA 1604 campus on June 7, beginning at 2pm.
My office is working on the schedule of his visit. He plans to be on campus from 2-4 or 5pm. We are structuring a tour, an opportunity to meet with COEHD Associate Deans, Department Chairs, and other campus colleagues (based on their availability), and wanted to provide you with the opportunity to drop into an open session (light refreshments served) if you feel there is potential for collaboration or future work together or are just interested in meeting a colleague.
This is tentatively planned to be in MB 3.308, from 3-4pm. Please let us know if you can attend so we have a sense of what we need to order in terms of refreshments.

Please join me in congratulating Justin as the new Department Fiscal Specialist for the ConTex Office here at UTSA. Justin's last day with the Research Service Center will be June 15, 2018. We are very sorry to see him go as he has been a significant asset to our office. Those who have worked with Justin know how knowledgable and helpful he has always been. He will be greatly missed in our office, but we are happy he has this opportunity to pursue his professional growth. We are in the process of posting this position and hope to hire quickly. In the meantime, Jesse and I are available to assist with grant-related matters.

Genesis Cogle, a senior at North East ISD's James Madison High School, was recently awarded the 2018 UTSA MLK, Jr. Scholarship. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Awards Ceremony was held at the City Council Chambers on Wednesday, May 16. Karla Broadus, director of the UTSA African American Studies program, and San Antonio Mayor, Ron Nirenberg, were among those that presented Cogle with the scholarship. Mexican American Studies (MAS) program at UTSA invites your schools to participate in our 2018 MAS Social Studies and Literature Teachers’ Academy June 25-29, 2018.
The Academy engages secondary teachers in intellectually oriented readings, workshops, and discussions to increase content knowledge and pedagogical skills to integrate the Mexican American experience for Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills in social studies as well as meet the specific content area for Mexican American Studies as a special topics course.
In addition, the Academy will be held at UTSA’s Institute of Texan Cultures offering teachers a special tour to explore classroom resources inspired by ITC’s newest exhibit Los Tejanos. The MAS Social Studies Teachers’ Academy provides professional development hours/credit.

To receive special education services, students must meet the eligibility criteria for one of the 13 disability categories designated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004. To access services, predefined criteria from one of these examples must adversely affect a student’s academic performance to a “disabling” degree. These disability labels do a disservice to students in a number of ways.
