Funding Opportunity--NSF Research on Bias, Prejudice, and Discrimination February 14, 2024
by Iwan Notowidigdo
Greeting Colleagues,
Happy St. Valentine’s Day (or for some Lupercalia). With today’s funding opportunity e-blast, I want to focus on an NSF Dear Colleague Letter that intersects with the research interests of many (if not all) COEHD faculty. While it is not funded through the NSF STEM Education directorate, potential proposals are related to work in social and behavioral sciences areas.
In addition, Lucy Deckard of Academic Research Funding Strategies, LLC provided a workshop on competing for NSF grants yesterday and shared a Dropbox link to the workshop's PowerPoint https://bit.ly/UTSA-NSF-2024 (It is requested that this link not be shared outside of the UTSA community.)
NSF Dear Colleague Letter: Research on Bias, Prejudice, and Discrimination
https://new.nsf.gov/funding/opportunities/social-behavioral-science-bias-...
The U.S. National Science Foundation's (NSF) Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE) Directorate issued a Dear Colleague Letter to invite proposals for research on the science of bias, prejudice, and discrimination and their societal effects. This initiative seeks to support transformative projects that enhance our understanding of:
* The developmental origins of social bias
* The neural mechanisms that underlie stereotype-influenced behavior
* Factors contributing to bias expansion
* Protective measures against bias
* Effective interventions for reducing bias, discrimination, and prejudice
* The nature and impact of bias-based violence, terrorism, and hate crimes
Strategic Research Directions:
* Bias in Under-studied Contexts: Research on forms and sources of bias in under-represented communities.
* Contextual Factors: Studies that explore how bias is influenced by geographic, economic, societal, and institutional contexts.
* Developmental Origins: Investigations connecting early developmental preferences to advanced socio-cognitive processes related to bias.
Proposals should align with existing SBE program goals and submission guidelines. This initiative does not represent a new competition or program. Titles should begin with "BPD" to indicate their response to this Dear Colleague Letter (DCL). The "manage where to apply" feature on Research.gov allows for additional program designation. Engage with program directors in targeted programs for guidance.
Participating SBE Programs:
Accountable Institutions and Behavior (Full proposal due: August 15, 2024)

COEHD faculty are highly encouraged to apply, leveraging this opportunity to contribute to the national discourse on diversity, equity, inclusion, and the prevention of hate-motivated violence. Please contact me with any questions or for support in applying.
Thank you.
