UTSA - UT Health Merger
by Mario Torres
Dear COEHD faculty and staff,
By now, you’ve each heard the wonderful news of the UTSA - UT Health merger. What a historic and momentous day for our university, the City of San Antonio, and all of South Texas – one that should be celebrated and remembered. The impact of this merger on the image and stature of UTSA is likely to be substantial and will have immediate effects on key metrics such as overall enrollment, our endowment, research dollars, etc. It will certainly situate us among a unique and elite class of comprehensive, “powerhouse” universities that host medical/nursing/dental schools and health science centers. I hope you share my excitement for the benefits and potential synergies that can come from this.
Although there is no fixed timeline yet for full integration, the university will begin preparing a prospectus for approval from SACSCOC. More information regarding logistics for the merger and how the university moves forward operationally short and long term is forthcoming. In the meantime, please refer to the attached documents for an overview and FAQs.
Provost Shipley will provide a deeper overview of the merger during her remarks at our COEHD kickoff meeting August 6th. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns. I wish all of you the best as we begin another great year.
Mario

Your expertise and dedication will certainly be missed. I thoroughly concur that head banging on bureaucratic walls is not recommended. I gave that up seven years ago and never regretted my decision. I hope you enjoy every minute of your retirement Mike. You have earned it! All the best! It has been a pleasure working with you!

UTSA’s Camp Durango fills service gap for families with autistic children
In the waning days of summer, the downtown campus at the University of Texas at San Antonio has been alive with the sounds of play. Video games. Laser tag. Potato sack races.
For 23 autistic adolescents and young adults, the fun, team-building and social connections they and their families and caretakers found at Camp Durango on Wednesday are all too rare.

UTSA's Camp Durango brings joy and fun to research
There are many ways to conduct academic research, but not many researchers find projects in the joy of a weeklong summer camp. Camp Durango is a summer day camp for children and youth with autism and for their siblings. The goal of the program is to have campers participate in research while they take part in fun camp activities.
