with UTSA doctoral fellow and former human resources director Catherine Robert joins the
American-Statesman at noon Monday for a Facebook Live discussion on the growing problem of
improper teacher-student relationships. A Statesman investigation, the first of its kind,

allegations of having improper relationships with students were ever criminally charged,

What Elizabeth Warren and so many other women can teach
us<http://www.expressnews.com/news/news_columnists/elaine_ayala/articl...
by ELAINE AYALA - San Antonio Express-News | Pub: 02/13
“Warren persisted, and that’s what all of us have done and need to do,” said Ellen Riojas
Clark, a UTSA professor emeritus now out of the workplace. “But it’s different for us.”
Speaking up comes with risk, she says. “A young person has to be very cognizant of how to
respond. Be polite, but strong. Have manos de jarro,” a phrase that refers to heavy arms
at your side that “can’t be moved.” “You won’t have the whole world watching” as
witnesses, she said. At one point in her career, she sued the UT System, she said. “No one
talked to me.” She fought back by looking at people right in the eye and saying, “Good
morning,” she said. “Use body language, come from strength.”
