Greetings Colleagues,
In addition to the Funding Opportunities e-blast that I will be putting out bi-weekly, I’m
alternating with a Grants Developments Update e-blast that will have resources, news,
professional development opportunities, and other information. As always, I welcome
feedback on what works best for you in providing this kind of information to COEHD faculty
and staff.

The COEHD Research Team has developed this brief FAQ sheet with information about changes
to procedures, various offices, and documents to be consulted when applying for funding.

You might want to bookmark this page to have it at hand for answering questions about
applying for grants. At the bottom of the page, course/research buyouts and F&A are
explained. There is also a link to the COEHD Research Handbook, which goes into further
detail about the roles and responsibilities of different offices as well as planning and
submitting grant applications.

Subject: [EXTERNAL] [Faculty Funding Opportunity]: FY2021 ONR Young Investigator Program
Importance: High
Good afternoon HBCU/MI Community and Allies,
I’m writing on behalf of Mr. Anthony C. Smith Sr., Director of the DoN HBCU/MI Program, to
share information about the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Young Investigator Program
(YIP) and to encourage eligible faculty members to apply.
Per the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), YIP seeks to identify and support academic
scientists and engineers who:
* are in their first or second full-time tenure-track or tenure-track-equivalent
academic appointment,
* received their PhD or equivalent degree on or after 01 January 2013, and
* show exceptional promise for doing creative research.
YIP’s main objectives include attracting outstanding faculty members to the Department of
the Navy's Science and Technology (S&T) research program, supporting their
research, and encouraging their teaching and research careers.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to identify and contact ONR Program Officers aligned
with technical area(s) of interest to discuss their research ideas. A list of most Program
Officers and their contact information can be found at the following links:

Typical awards are $510,000 over a 36-month period of performance. Applicants may request
up to $170,000 for each 12-month interval. These funds may be budgeted against any
reasonable costs related to conducting the proposed research, for example, salary for the
investigator, graduate student support, supplies and applicable indirect cost. Additional
funding may be requested (under the 36-month period) up to $250,000 to cover equipment
costs, testing, ship time, etc. These funds must be included as an option and the
applicant should discuss any request for additional funding with the program officer prior
to submission.
The FY 2021 ONR YIP FOA is posted on
grants.gov; its announcement number is
N00014-21-S-F001. You can also find the FOA on ONR's Funding Opportunities page using
the following link:
*
https://www.onr.navy.mil/work-with-us/funding-opportunities/announcements
The deadline for submission is Friday, March 26, 2021 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time.
Please be sure to read the YIP FOA carefully for information regarding eligibility,
review criteria, and other pertinent matters. For further clarity after reading the FOA,
please direct questions to Dr. Reginald Williams, at onryip(a)navy.mil.
Best,
