It is with deep sadness that I tell you that Dr. Dewey D. Davis, the first professor
hired at UTSA, and a science educator, passed away on Wednesday, September 17th. He was
beloved and respected by all who had the good fortune to know him. Dewey was a strong
advocate for women in science and for increasing the number of women in leadership
positions. I always looked forward to seeing him and to learning about the latest
scientific discoveries that had caught his interest. As many of you know, he and his wife
Ruth, could always be seen at UTSA football and basketball games, enthusiastically
supporting the Roadrunners. Dewey was a brilliant scholar who gave generously of his time
and talents to help build UTSA. He has left us a proud legacy that should inspire and
energize us as we carry on with our work in the COEHD.
Consistent with his strong commitment to education, Dewey and his family created the
"Dewey D. David, Ph.D. First Professor at UTSA Endowed Scholarship" for those
pursuing secondary school science teaching.
Respectfully,
Betty
