I write to all of you in support of the SECC. In an email earlier today, Liliana reported that the current COEHD participation rate in this Charitable Campaign is only 26%. We in the college have always prided ourselves on our commitment to equity, to social justice, and to meaningful community outreach and engagement. Most if not all of us, already donate to other charities, but we know that especially in these difficult economic times, all charities are hard-pressed to do more with considerably less. I've always felt that we lead a privileged life in academia-we enjoy flexible time, good benefits, an comfortable and beautiful surroundings. We've worked hard to get these jobs, but not everyone who works hard gets to enjoy the standard of living that we do, regardless of our position in the university. I understand that the minimum contribution that's necessary on an individual level is $3-it seems so insignificant, but I also realize that every little bit adds up. There is a huge range of organizations to choose from, and many of these have benefitted us directly or those whom we know. I'd be surprised if there is even one person in the COEHD whose life hasn't been touched by one or more of these charities. I'm asking you to contribute whatever you're able to, in recognition of the need that exists in today's world, and in appreciation of the gifts we ourselves have been given.
