Apply Now for Faculty OER
Grant<http://education.utsa.edu/awards_announcements/article/apply_now...
Applications are now being accepted for Adopt-a-Free-Textbook Grants, offered by the UTSA
Libraries. The grant is open to tenure and non-tenure track faculty, and offers funds to
support faculty professional development and teaching.
A workshop featuring UTSA faculty that have adopted OER and David Harris, Editor-in-Chief
at OpenStax will be hosted on Monday, March 4, in the JPL Assembly Room, 4.04.22.
The Adopt-a-Free-Textbook Grant was created to support the adoption and adaption of open
educational resources at UTSA, offering an incentive for faculty to integrate a free
textbook, or other free instructional materials, into a course.
For more information and to apply, visit our OER website and explore our guide to free
textbooks that align with high-enrollment courses at UTSA. For more information, contact
DeeAnn Ivie, Open Education Coordinator.
Adopt-a-Free-Textbook grants are generously funded by the UTSA Libraries and The Peggy and
Taylor Eighmy Student Success Fund.

Despite what many people may think, images on Google (or anywhere else on the Internet for
that matter) are not free to use. Believe it or not, there are professionals who make
their living from those photographs. So every time you take one of the photos for free,
that is money the photographer is losing. That’s why a project called Creative
Commons<https://creativecommons.org/> is so valuable. It provides images for people
to use with the original creator getting attribution and recognition. No money changes
hands but Creative Commons gives the artist the right to say how their work can be used.
Creative Commons isn’t perfect but it is a good attempt to try and regulate the “Wild
West” of the Internet. Where people take whatever they want to the detriment of the media
owner.

Study: Pre-K 4 SA Grads Score Higher on Tests, Have Better
Attendance<https://woai.iheart.com/content/2019-01-29-study-pre-k-4-sa...
by JIM FORSYTH - News Radio 1200 WOAI | Pub: 01/29
The first kids who enrolled in San Antonio's Pre-K 4 SA program when it began in 2013
are now old enough to take STAAR testing, and a study of the results of those tests by
Pre-K veteran third graders shows substantial improvement over classmates who were not
enrolled in the program, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.
Higher test scores for Pre-K 4 SA
graduates<http://digital.olivesoftware.com/Olive/ODN/SanAntonioExpress...
by KRISTA TORRALVA - San Antonio Express-News | Pub: 01/29
The study compared nearly 10,000 students — including 400 who attended the city-funded
program in the 2013-2014 school year — who were in the same third grade classes and had
similar demographics, said Mike Villarreal, director of the University of Texas at San
Antonio’s Urban Education Institute, which conducted it.
UTSA Study Indicates Pre-K 4 SA Positively Affects STAAR Scores,
Attendance<https://therivardreport.com/utsa-study-indicates-pre-k-4-sa...
by EMILY DONALDSON - The Rivard Report | Pub: 01/29
The first group of students who attended Pre-K 4 SA in its first year has taken
third-grade STAAR exams, and results showed the students were more likely to perform
better on state exams and attend class than those who did not attend public pre-K. A new
study from the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Urban Education Institute also showed
the former Pre-K 4 SA students were less likely to be identified as needing
special-education services. The study also suggests the first group of Pre-K 4 SA students
“fared slightly better” than children who enrolled in public pre-K.
