As you may know a proposal has been brought to Faculty Senate regarding the elimination of the Final Exam Period and extend the semester by one week. No formal request for HOP change has been made at this time however we are seeking your input. Senators have been asked to gather feedback, compile and send to me by December 1. If you have questions, please contact me - we are learning quite a bit about UTSA, SACs and DOE requirements. * Michael Moyer, Department of Counseling * Patricia McGee, Department of Educational Psychology * John Zhang, Department of Health and Kinesiology * Teresa Sellers, Non-tenure Track Representative * Howard Smith, Department of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies * Mark Giles, Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies * Emily Bonner, Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching The main points presented to the Senate were: * A very limited survey indicates that of those surveyed most faculty members either (a) do not use the final exam period for an exam or (b) do not meet with students during the period, although summative assessments are implemented. * The final exam schedule can put undue burden on students who can have up to three exams per exam day. * Many faculty members may have exams that can be given in a regular class meeting. * Longer exam periods can now be requested and would continue to be available to those faculty requiring a longer period.
